An oil well "christmas tree" is a series of pipes and valves that are situated on a well head after drilling of the well has been completed. This equipment needs to be protected when fracturing a well.

Operation Details:

The tree saver is a heavy gauged piece of pipe (approximately 2 meters long, 5 centimeters in diameter and weighs 90 kilograms), which is inserted through the christmas tree and into the well tubing to prevent the fracturing fluid from wearing away at the valves and parts of the christmas tree. The saver is held in place by means of a bolted coupling and a rubber sleeve.

All employers in this industry are members of Energy Safety Canada (ESC). Safety associations represent the interests of employers and promote workplace safety through education and other initiatives. Improved workplace safety can result in fewer claims and help lower premiums. A portion of premiums collected is allocated to the association to support these initiatives.

Underwriting Considerations:

Included in this industry is the servicing and/or minor repairing of valves on well heads when done in conjunction with tree saver services.

The general petroleum industry review conducted in 1991 resulted in a the creation of this downhole service related rate group. Industry 09921 was retained as an identifiable industry in this rate group, effective January 1, 1992.
