Well Casing Services

Industry Code: 09915

Compulsory

This industry is intended to cover those employers who engage in well casing services related to drilling.

Operation Details:

Activities in this industry are conducted during the drilling process, and also after drilling has reached the target formation and tests indicate there is enough gas or oil to justify further expense.
Casing is steel pipe. It is threaded together, run or 'tripped' down the hole, and cemented in place. This occurs as drilling progresses to prevent the wall of the hole from caving in, and to allow a means of eventually extracting oil or gas if the well is productive.

Snubbing units are used primarily on high-pressure wells. Two general types of snubbing units are used: the hydraulic unit and rig-assisted unit. The hydraulic unit operates with a self-contained hydraulic system and utilizes cylinders to move pipe in and out of the well. The rig-assisted unit uses the drawworks on the rig in a block-and-pulley arrangement to move the pipe/casing.

As the well is being drilled, drilling fluid is forced into the hole to lubricate the drill bit and to help control downhole pressures. If pressure downhole exceeds the pressures being inserted into the hole, a 'kick' will occur. This must be controlled quickly to prevent a blow-out, which is an uncontrolled release of fluids or gases out of the hole. Blow-out preventers (BOP's) are high-pressure valves located at the wellhead to control pressure. BOP installation is part of this industry.

Power tongs are the large 'wrenches' used for turning the pipe in the hole, in entry and exit. These are pneumatically or hydraulically operated tools that serve to spin the pipe tight. The 'torque' applied by the power tongs must be measured and controlled. These services are included in this industry.

Transporting pipe and cleaning pipe at the well-site is included in this industry. Pipe is situated on racks near the drilling rig, and are tansported or 'carried' to the rig by a wire cable running from a winch. The units that transport pipe are referred to as pickup/laydown units. Prior to casing being placed into a hole, the pipes threads must be cleaned, and varsol, wire brushes and rags are used in this process.

The types of workers and equipment used in this industry are varied, but compliment and support the varied activities described above.

All employers in this industry are members of Energy Safety Canada (ESC). Safety associations represent the interests of employers and promote workplace safety through education and other initiatives. Improved workplace safety can result in fewer claims and help lower premiums. A portion of premiums collected is allocated to the association to support these initiatives.

Underwriting Considerations:

Snubbing units may be involved in well casing services as described above, or downhole oilfield services related to completion, stimulation, testing and wireline services. Snubbing unit activity is classified in this industry.

Well servicing with service rigs is classified in industry 9903.
