Industry Code: 95108
Operations of a Metis settlement involve local administration and improvement services.
Operation Details:
A Metis Settlement's overall operations may include typical municipal administrative activities including: utilities, road maintenance, operation of learning, community and social centers, recreation facility operations and other facets of public works.
Underwriting Considerations:
The operations of a Metis Settlement are compulsory, while those of a First Nations are not.
Settlements are operated by incorporated associations and perform similar activities as other municipalities. It is not uncommon for the associations to pursue work off the settlement lands. In these cases, an additional classification should be assigned.
Metis settlements' overall operations may be diverse and may include separate incorporations which are owned, controlled and under the directorship of the metis settlement. In such situations, these separate entities (if the services are provided to and have no life apart from the settlement operations) will be classified the same as the settlement (industry 95108), provided the operations are on the settlement land.
If a Metis person operates a business as a proprietorship or limited company and works exclusively on the Metis Settlement, the account will be open under the same industry classification as the Metis Settlement, industry 95108. However, if the Metis person's proprietorship or limited company performs work off settlement land, the operations will be classified in the most appropriate industry pertaining to the operations being performed.
