This industry can only include provincial government departments designated as such by the Lieutenant Governor in Council. These departments are governed by the Public Service Act (P. 31).

Operation Details:

This classification generally includes departments whose activities are regulatory in nature and consequently the workers are predominantly administration or clerical staff.

Underwriting Considerations:

Entire departments are viewed as business units and are assigned a rate group which best suits the overall nature of their business activities, experience, etc. Each department should be assigned only one industry classification.

Elected officials are covered under a separate legislation, M.L.A. Compensation Act (M. 17), and therefore, these officials are not included in this industry.

Individuals declared to be workers employed by the Government of Alberta (i.e. deemed workers) as per Section 7 (1) of the General Regulations of the Workers' Compensation Act may be covered under a separate account; however, these accounts should be placed in the same industry as the department responsible for the deemed workers.

Boards, authorities, commissions, foundations, etc., established as separate legal entities, should be classified in the specific industry in which their activities are conducted. When a specific industry can not be identified, these organizations may be classified in industry 93109 (Authorities, Board, etc. - Compulsory) or industry 93113 (Authorities, Boards, etc - Exempt).

Subcontractors to a provincial government department are not classified in this industry, but are classified in the industry that best describes their overall operations.
