Boards, Agencies, Commissions (Voluntary)

Industry Code: 93113

Exempt
Industry Custom Pricing - ER

This industry covers Authorities, Boards, Commissions or Foundations, Foreign Missions and Consulates established by statute for which coverage is voluntary and operations are regulatory, administrative or tax collection in nature.

Operation Details:

Authorities, Boards, Commissions or Foundations normally operate under and administrate specific legislation.

This industry will include provincial marketing boards such as the Alberta Egg and Fowl Marketing Board, Hog Producers Marketing Board, Alberta Petroleum Marketing Commission.

The Agriculture Financial Services Board (previously the Hail and Crop Insurance Board) sets policy and sells insurance policies, adjusts claims and provides financial services. Sales and adjusting may be done in-house or contracted out.

The Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (previously the Energy Resources Conservation Board, up to 1996) controls and directs all exploration, development and production of and by oil and gas, resource and utility companies. Policies and regulations are enforced, particularly in recognition of energy and resource conservation.

A foreign diplomatic mission (or embassy) denotes a group of people from a foreign state or international inter-governmental organization (ex: the UN) present in Canada to represent that state/organization in Canada. While foreign embassies are normally located in Ottawa, they may have consulates located in Alberta and other provinces to represent the embassy and to more directly organize improved business and cultural relations and activities in these regions.

Underwriting Considerations:

Boards, commissions, etc., which operate business ventures in competition with private industry are classified in the appropriate industry classification.

Any property or business location operated by an embassy or consulate is not considered an area outside of Alberta, and WCB liability protection is still enforced regarding workplace accidents that occur both in and outside of embassy/consular property in Alberta. Also, if voluntary coverage is requested, it is provided to all diplomats and other staff while in Alberta, as the embassy or consulate is considered to be a permanent undertaking (and is not considered to be carrying on business in Alberta on a temporary basis).
