Industry Code: 09201
The purpose of this industry is to drill bore holes for the purpose of holding explosives used in seismic exploration activities.
Operation Details:
Shot hole drilling is performed with a small truck-mounted driller. This is normally a shallow drilling operation, drilling to a depth of 50 to 75 feet. This activity involves drilling and the placing of the explosives in the drilled hole. The exploration/seismic crew is responsible for the discharge of the explosive. When the explosives are discharged or shot, the vibrations are recorded on a seismograph. Shot hole drilling services are generally contracted to seismic geophysical contractors to perform the drilling aspect of the seismic operation.
Businesses may use auger trucks, auger bits, truck mounted drilling rigs, rubber tracked vehicles (known as nodwells), handtools, and explosive devices and may employ equipment operators, technical staff, labourers, drivers and office/administrative staff.
All employers in this industry are members of Energy Safety Canada (ESC). Safety associations represent the interests of employers and promote workplace safety through education and other initiatives. Improved workplace safety can result in fewer claims and help lower premiums. A portion of premiums collected is allocated to the association to support these initiatives.
Underwriting Considerations:
Seismic exploration companies are classified in industry 09200. Should an employer conduct drilling in conjunction with the exploration, an additional industry is required in industry 09201, Shothole drilling.
Rathole/rig anchoring is performed prior to the placement of the drilling rig and is classified in industry 09904. Water well drilling is performed for domestic, commercial and irrigation applications to drill water wells or for obtaining deep core samples and is classified in industry 42130. Horizontal/angular drilling (industry 42103) is the boring of holes under roads, water bodies, railways, airstrips, sidewalks, lawns, driveways, etc. to establish openings for sewer or waterlines, telephone or cable tv lines (utility lines). Businesses procuring soil samples obtain samples for such companies as engineering firms in anticipation of future projects such as pipeline work, sewer and waterline installation, etc., and are classified in industry 42150. Businesses which offer a cross section of the drilling services found in this rate group are classified in the industry which represents the majority of the drilling services performed.
Industry Custom Pricing: Waiving Cost Relief Option
This industry has chosen to participate in Industry Custom Pricing effective January 1, 2010. Costs related to the aggravation of a pre-existing condition will not be removed from the experience record of employers classified in this industry. In return, the portion of premiums collected to fund retroactive cost relief has been removed from the industry rate, resulting in a reduction in WCB premium rates for the industry.

Rate Group History:
This industry was reviewed along with the general petroleum industry review in 1991. The result of the review, with respect to this industry, was to separate shothole drilling from other truck mounted drilling operations. In 1992, rate group 421200 was established, consolidating a number of drilling businesses which use similar drilling, boring and augering activities, equipment, processes and occupational mixes. In 1999, rate group 421200 was consolidated with shot hole drilling, rate group 092101, Sector 2 - Mining and Petroleum Development.
