Scaffold/Cranes - Rental/Erect

Industry Code: 89928

Compulsory
Industry Custom Pricing - ER

This classification specifically describes rental and/or erection services of scaffolding and/or tower cranes.

Operation Details:

Scaffolding is a temporary support structure for workers, tools, and/or materials during construction. The scaffold may also have to be temporarily anchored depending on the height and location of the project undertaken.

In erecting a tower crane (those seen during the construction of high-rise buildings) other lifting equipment is often required. Parts and accessories are often shuttled to and from the worksite.

Businesses may utilize a warehouse/yard/shop to store and service their scaffolding, and may additionally use manlifts, other similar equipment, trucks, handtools, parts, and may employ technicians, labourers, sales/estimators, or office/administrative staff.

Businesses working in commercial or industrial settings where high angle rescue services may be required, have a higher risk of injury than companies not offering the same services. Employers providing high angle rescue services should be classified in this industry.

Rope access applies practical ropework to allow workers to reach elevated or constricted areas without the use of scaffolding, cradles or an aerial work platform. Businesses providing rope access services to a variety of industries (i.e., construction, oil and gas, safety, etc.) are classified in this industry. Safety standards for rope access are governed by a number of organizations including the Society of Professional Rope Access Technicians (SPRAT) and the Industrial Rope Access Trade Association (IRATA).

All employers in this industry are members of the Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA). Safety associations represent the interests of employers and promote workplace safety through education and other initiatives. Improved workplace safety can result in fewer claims and help lower premiums. A portion of premiums collected is allocated to the association to support these initiatives.

Underwriting Considerations:

Businesses which sell and/or rent mobile cranes with operators are classified in Industry 40604 - Mobile Equipment Dealers. Businesses which only sell or rent cranes without operators are classified in Industry 62201 - Mobile Equipment Dealers. A business which rents equipment with the option of providing operators is classified in Industry 40604.

Employers providing on-site emergency medical or emergency response where high angle rescue is not involved should be classified in Industry 82710 - Health Care Services – Other Providers.

Businesses utilizing rope access services as part of their overall business are classified in the industry which best describes their operations.
