This industry covers the non-profit organization Corps of Commissionaires which consists of a group of armed forces veterans whose services are normally engaged by various levels of government to perform such duties as parking attendant, building concierge, or night watchman.

This industry also includes businesses whose primary operation is the transportation of money and valuables in armoured vehicles under strict security.

Operation Details:

For Commissionaires, work locations are primarily government oriented, with occasional excursions into industrial worksites. The job duties may include watchmen, security patrols, technical surveillance, telephone and switchboard duties, routine office and clerical work, reception and messenger services, and parking and traffic control.

Commissionaires may also provide security services outside of those provided to governments with respect to doorman services, industrial inventory, hospitalized prisoners, mail distribution, special events, servicing of automated teller machines, and by-law enforcement.

Armoured vehicles are usually operated by a uniformed driver who is accompanied by armed escort. Cash, securities and valuables are transported to and from businesses to banks, and from banks to banks. Armoured vehicle service businesses may also transport and handle non-negotiable securities, receipts, documents, etc., without armed escort.

Cash may be counted at a central location and funds delivered to clients, most typically retail and commercial businesses, and made available in the form of a cash "float" on a regularly scheduled basis.

The equipment includes trucks, vans, dollies, and coin rolling machines; and workers include armed security personnel, bonded warehouse workers and administrative staff.

Underwriting Considerations:

The Corps of Commissionaires is a unique organization, non-profit in nature, which by its own individualism, lends itself to definition by name. The Corps of Commissionaires can only be classified in this industry.

Industrial patrols and security services, offered by businesses other than the Corps of Commissionaires, are classified in industry 89902.

Other employers in this industry may service automatic teller machines (ATMs). The activities under this service include stocking the ATMs with money, minor ATM servicing, and reconciling deposits and withdrawals.
