Operation Details:

- facilities for recreation only
- facilities for rent to the public
- ancillary services for the convenience of their customers such as instruction in one or more sports, day care or nursery service, juice or coffee bar, etc.

- activities are centered at one location or branch location (indoors only)
- business income is derived from general memberships, walk-in clientele and/or rental of the facilities

The Young Men's/Women's Christian Associations (YMCA/YWCA) are organizations created to service community needs. When these organizations operate a recreational facility, they will be classified in this industry.

Underwriting Considerations:

Private clubs may provide similar facilities and services, but a private club is a non-profit organization and is restricted to members only.

A private club is typically registered as a 5-series entity with Corporate Registry (incorporation number starts with 5). Membership to a private club typically allows each member annual voting privileges for President, Secretary-Treasurer, etc., as they come up for election each year. As per the General Regulations of the Workers’ Compensation Act, the operations of private clubs are an exempted activity but if optional coverage is requested then these operations would be covered under Industry 87508 – Private Clubs.

If the primary focus of a YMCA/YWCA organization is centered on social involvement; training programs regarding leadership and social responsibility; accommodation or counselling, they will be classified in Industry 89925 – Social/Community Support Services.
