The basic activity is the protection of businesses and property by providing controlled access; to guard against break-ins, stealing, vandalism and other potential incidences.

Operation Details:

The personnel required to carry out this service are trained and may be uniformed. Mobile patrols will perform security checks at night on the client's premises such as office buildings, industrial and business property, shopping malls, construction sites, etc. Patrolling may be done in vehicles or on foot. Security firms also provide personnel for crowd control (body guards) at special events, strikes, civil disorders, and to oversee the servicing of automated teller machines.

Employers may also provide training such as self-defense, conduct seminars and undertake integrity checks on individuals.

Underwriting Considerations:

Many security firms have also expanded their services to include private investigation work which is included in this industry. If businesses sell and install security equipment as their main business service, the classification is industry 42160. If businesses only provide investigation services, or bailiff or document serving services, the classification is industry 89924.

Industry Custom Pricing: Modified Experience Rating

This industry has chosen to participate in Industry Custom Pricing effective January 1, 2017. For employers participating in the Experience Rating Plan for Large Employers, the following experience rating features will be used in determining their premium rate:

- Maximum discount or surcharge of 60%
- Participation rate of 1% for every $2000 in premiums
- Maximum participation of 100%
- Maximum experience used of 100%
