Industry Code: 89705
This industry covers businesses that specialize in residential and commercial furnace cleaning services.
Operation Details:
Large truck-mounted vacuum systems are used to clean furnaces and furnace ducts. This process involves attaching hoses to the ducting and then any waste is retained in a tank on the truck.
Chimney cleaning (sweeping) is included in this industry. This activity is usually performed on wood burning fireplaces or stoves. It consists of a long handled wire bristle brush being forced down a chimney usually by hand; scraping the sides of the chimney to remove a build up of tar, soot and other contaminants left behind from burning wood in the fireplace or stove. The brush is moved up and down the entire length of the chimney several times, to scrape off the buildup of material. The material that is scraped off falls into the fireplace or stove, where it is removed by hand or vacuum and disposed of.
Underwriting Considerations:
Furnace cleaning may be complemented by tune-up activities such as adding motor oil or replacing the filter. Furnace cleaning, in conjunction with more extensive repairs, would be classified in industry 42117 and is not eligible for a separate classification.
Furnace cleaning, when conducted with other services such as installing, servicing, maintaining and/or repairing heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment (industry 42117); or sales and service of refrigeration equipment (industry 89600); is classified in the appropriate industry describing the overall operations.
