Travelling Sales/Mfg Agents

Industry Code: 89100

Exempt

This classification is for out of province manufacturers which have sales people in Alberta, marketing the companies own product (travelling sales). This classification also covers independent commissioned sales people, marketing for unrelated manufacturers based out of province (mfg's representative).

Operation Details:

An employer can only be classified in this industry providing there is no inventory warehoused in Alberta at all, either at a company owned/rented facility or through a public warehousing company. Goods sold, are delivered direct from the manufacturer, out of province, to the purchaser, in province. Installation or after sales servicing of the goods sold is not permitted and this restriction applies to such services provided through subcontract arrangements.

This industry will include salespeople and clerical staff only. Salespeople may work from their residence or from a sales office maintained by the company. Salespeople may carry product samples for demonstrations and "give aways".

Underwriting Considerations:

Companies which buy and resell, whether the product is handled or not, are not included in this industry.

Liquor salesmen representing a manufacturer not in Alberta are classified in this industry. If the manufacturer was manufacturing in Alberta, the liquor salesmen would be classified in industry 14300, liquor and wine manufacturing.

Businesses who set up displays/layouts, for simply advertising purposes, for manufacturers in retail stores are classified in industry 86201, Window and Store Display Advertising Services. They are only setting up an advertising display and possibly using stock on hand at the retailers business, not stocking shelves.

Businesses which market goods through mail order sales (i.e. catalogue), that do not have inventory warehoused or any other related operations in Alberta, are classified in this industry, 89100. However, when businesses, which have mail order sales, warehouse inventory in Alberta, or have any other retail operations, the entire business is classified in the appropriate retail classification.
