This industry consolidates private clubs, sporting clubs, fitness clubs and gun clubs which are membership facilities and generally do not allow walk-in clientele unless a guest of a member. This industry also covers Canadian Forces - Non-public fund activities.

Operation Details:

It covers the total operation of the club or facility, from the operation of full service fitness facilities, administration, ticket selling, food services and catering, membership registration, competition organizing to maintenance of the grounds and buildings.

Organizations such as baseball clubs are classified in this industry. The organization, promotion and operation of an amateur games meet such as the Commonwealth Games, World Universiade Games, Alberta Summer Games and Alberta Winter Games are also classified here. This industry excludes players and playing coaches.

Private Clubs - such as Royal Canadian Legions, Elks, Scandinavian Clubs, German-Canadian Club, etc. are classified in this industry. Membership is restricted, however, members can usually bring guests. The activity is meeting with members and socializing. Facilities such as dance halls, meeting areas, bars and eating areas are provided.

Gun, Trap and Skeet Shooting Clubs - operate for the purpose of developing and improving the shooting skills of their members. The club may own and operate a facility which is designed to allow the safe discharge of firearms for the purpose of practicing or competing. The range may consist of indoor or outdoor firing lanes or may be designed for trap shooting. If a gun club establishes a retail sales area and derives its primary source of revenue from sales of firearms, munitions and repair services, its entire operations are considered to be part of industry 67300, sporting goods store.

Fitness clubs and facilities may be referred to as health spas, figure salons, health centers or health studios. These employers are included in this industry when services are primarily related to providing exercise and work out facilities for members. Facilities and services may include some massage and physiotherapy as well as saunas, steam baths and sun tanning beds.

Included in this industry are karate, judo, tai chi, and tai kwon do clubs. Coverage is extended only to instructors while instructing, not tournament play.

Canadian Forces - Non Public Fund Activities - covered in this industry are for the benefit of Canadian Forces personnel at the bases in Alberta. The employees who operate these facilities include civilians, off-duty service personnel and on-duty service personnel who may do work for the Non Public Fund in addition to regular duties. Activities may consist of any or all of the following: mess hall, curling rink, bingo hall, swimming pool, bowling alley, library, kindergarten, canteen, grocery store, garage, theatre, gift shop, chapel, riding club, playground, teen facility and other specialty shops or stores.

Underwriting Considerations:

If a fitness facility as described above caters to walk-in clientele it is classified in this industry. Squash, tennis, racquet, and rock climbing facilities operated for general public and walk in clientele are classified in industry 89907.

Other recreation facilities' services operated for public use would be classified in the appropriate industry based on the type of facility.

Businesses which provide exercise and work out facilities in connection with other spa, personal aesthetics or beauty salon services, beyond massage therapy or sun tanning, will have the entire operation classified in Industry 87200.

Industry Custom Pricing: Waiving Cost Relief Option

This industry has chosen to participate in Industry Custom Pricing effective January 1, 2011. Costs related to the aggravation of a pre-existing condition will not be removed from the experience record of employers classified in this industry. In return, the portion of premiums collected to fund retroactive cost relief has been removed from the industry rate, resulting in a reduction in WCB premium rates for the industry.
