Hotels/Convention Centres

Industry Code: 87503

Compulsory

Hotels, motels and cabins are establishments that provide overnight or temporary accommodation for the convenience of the travelling public.

Operation Details:

Hotels/motels offer sleep and bath facilities and a host of hospitality services such as restaurant, dining lounge, lounge, tavern, gift/novelty/convenient store, convention and meeting rooms, cabaret rooms, swimming pool, etc. Hotel rooms are typically accessible only through a main lobby and may be multi-floored buildings with elevators; motor hotels may provide separate room access. Hotels may have extensive convention, meeting and banquet facilities.

Motels are usually walk-up buildings and have no central lobby. Therefore, suites are accessed directly from the perimeter parking area. Motels may offer kitchenettes where the travelling public can prepare their own meals.

Cabins are usually self-contained and are separate from one another. A restaurant, cafe or store may be part of the cabin operation, and some of the other amenities may be similar to the hotel and motel operation.

Motel and cabin operations may provide secondary provisions such as R.V. sites for rent, trampolines, arcades, swimming pools and other leisure and recreational activities.

Convention Centers include food services and are operated for public and private functions such as seminars, weddings, craft and trade shows, speaking engagements, etc. These facilities usually provide services for large numbers of people.

All employers in this industry (motels, hotels and convention centres) are subscribers of the Alberta Hotel and Lodging Association (AHLA). Safety associations represent the interests of employers and promote workplace safety through education and other initiatives. Improved workplace safety can result in fewer claims and help lower premiums. A portion of premiums collected is allocated to the association to support these initiatives.
