Compulsory

This classification is for businesses which prepare and sell food to the general public for consumption on site or take out.

It also includes businesses that cater food and beverage for weddings, cocktail parties, luncheons, anniversaries, sales meetings, staff meetings, banquets, barbecues, etc., and other social or group-type functions.

Operation Details:

This covers sit-down restaurants, lounges, fast food and drive-in services, soft drink stands, muffin, popcorn and cookie outlets, soup and sandwich bars as well as coffee and donut shops (see Underwriting Considerations).

In the case of large national or international chain restaurants which operate through franchises in the province, this industry also covers franchisors who will:
- stimulate sales in the province by conducting marketing campaigns,
- train franchisee staff on new equipment or procedures,
- conduct quality control inspection of franchisee premises, products and method of operation,
- operate new locations until a franchisee is selected,
- operate existing locations where a franchisee has ceased operating.

Restaurant staff includes management, cooks and kitchen staff, janitorial and maintenance personnel.

In catering, food is typically cooked and prepared prior to the catered event. The food and accessories are delivered and set up at the customer's premises. The activities consist of heating and serving may kinds of food and desserts, tending bar, cleaning up, etc., at the location of the catered event.

Businesses will operate commercial kitchens with stoves and coolers and also operate trucks/vans for delivery.

Catering staff can include food preparers, waiters/waitresses, drivers, sales, and administrative staff.

Underwriting Considerations:

Ice cream parlours or specialty confection stores are classified under industry 69904, Retail Specialty Stores provided no food preparation is done.

Bakeries which offer on site consumption of their own baked goods will be classified as a restaurant when they serve other food items which they do not bake. However, bakeries will often have a sitting area where people can have a coffee and donuts or pastries. Unless the bakery is providing or preparing food outside of normal breads, pastries, cookies, etc., it will be classified in industry 12900, Bakeries/Pasta Manufacturing.

Hotels and motels that operate a restaurant do not warrant an additional classification for the restaurant. Recreation facilities that offer food services as an ancillary activity for the convenience to the patrons do not require an additional classification for restaurant.

Internet cafés that sell internet time and have food service or a coffee bar are included in this industry code. If the business sells computer (internet) time without the sale of food or drink, then the company is classified in 62300, Office Equipment - Sales/Service.

Service stations will often be connected to a restaurant. Often such restaurants are operated by different persons than the service station. In such cases both the service station industry and restaurant industry are required.

Businesses that provide a mobile catering service for coffee breaks and lunches at industrial sites and construction sites are classified here in industry 87501. It is recognized that some catering companies provide workers to operate cafeterias owned by others (for example, where service is not accessible to the general public), and this activity is part of the catering industry.

Industrial and oilfield camp catering services are classified in industry 87505, Catering - Industrial Camps.
