Industry Code: 87200
This industry covers barber shops and beauty salons which provide hairdressing and other personal hygiene services (aesthetics). This industry includes employers which specialize in vocational training related to such services or employers which offer the training in conjunction with a barber or beauty salon venture. The operation of a tattoo parlour is also included in this industry.
Operation Details:
Compulsory:
Businesses in this industry may provide any combination of services and training related to haircuts, hairdressing, manicures, pedicures, facials, waxing, aesthetics, body wraps, etc. Services are generally provided by licensed hairdressers, beauticians, cosmetologists or aestheticians.
Tattoo parlours use stencils to outline a design on the client. The design is then followed by a tattoo machine (electric needle) that permanently marks the skin with colored ink. Tattoo businesses may also provide body piercing services.
Employers in this industry often have retail sales of personal hygiene products.
Optional:
Sun tanning salons when operated as a stand-alone business are classified in this industry on an optional basis. Stand-alone means there are no other services offered such as hairdressing, manicures, pedicures, facials, etc.
Hair removal by electrology or electrolysis when operated as a stand-alone operation is also classified in this industry on an optional basis.
Underwriting Considerations:
Services referred to as aesthetics are evolving and expanding. Cosmetic surgery and treatments which are required to be administered by a licensed physician would be covered in Industry 82500 - Private Medical/Physiotherapy Centres when restricted to such services. Businesses which offer such services in conjunction with other non-medical aesthetic or beauty treatment services, generally administered by aestheticians, would be classified in this industry.
Massage services when operated as a stand alone business are classified in Industry 82500 - Private Medical/Physiotherapy Centres.
Fitness and exercise facilities are classified in Industry 87508 - Private Clubs or Industry 89907 - Tennis/Squash/Rock Climbing Facilities as long as there are no beauty or cosmetic services provided in conjunction with the facility, in which case all operations would be classified in Industry 87200 - Beauty/Barber Shops and Schools.
Public education institutions such as N.A.I.T. or S.A.I.T. which provide training in these occupations as part of a broader vocational training service are classified in the appropriate education classification.
