Industry Code: 86913

Exempt
Industry Custom Pricing - CR

Businesses that provide a drafting or designing service for industrial, mechanical, architectural, advertising, or printing applications are classified in this industry.

Also classified here are software design companies. Companies of this nature provide software solutions (proprietary) to third parties for business or recreational purposes, independent of hardware sales.

Businesses which provide consulting, design and drafting services relative to architectural design are also classified in this industry. These services are offered to individuals, government agencies, urban planners, corporate clients, etc. who are contemplating the construction of a building, bridge, house, etc.

This industry also includes businesses providing interior designing and consulting services. This will consist of planning the decor and furnishings for the interior of a building, primarily residential but also offices, shops, etc.

Operation Details:

Drafting businesses in this industry may perform the services either in their own office or in the office of the client. With changing technology, this is often computerized work known as CAD, computer assisted drafting. Occasionally, it may be necessary to take measurements at a jobsite.

Graphic design and graphic arts services are included in this industry when the services are provided as a stand alone venture (desktop graphic design) apart from any related manufacturing of signs, printed material, etc. Businesses that provide graphic arts and design services engage in computerized work for custom production of graphics, logos, etc., primarily for business clients.

E - Commerce (e-business) companies that specialize in web design and on-line banner creation are classified in this industry.

Companies that maintain a proprietary website and offer their services as an 'on-line meeting place' or forum whereby unrelated parties may interact, are classified in this industry. Businesses of this nature receive their revenue by charging a fee to either the buyer or the seller to view or list products on their site. The business that owns the Web page does not take title to any of the products that are listed, but provides only a service so that unrelated parties can interact via the Internet. If a company does take title to the product, and their primary selling means is over the Internet, the entire business is classified in the appropriate retail classification.

Companies that use the Internet (web page) as the primary selling method are underwritten in the appropriate retail classification providing they hold inventory in Alberta at either an owned or rented facility.

The practice of architecture in Alberta is governed under the Architect's Act and administered through the Alberta Association of Architects (AAA). Membership is a prerequisite to practicing architecture in Alberta.

Generally, the majority of architectural design work is performed in an office drafting and/or drawing. Architects consult with clients and plan layouts, prepare sketches, produce scale construction drawings and write specifications. Architects may do any or all of the drafting work themselves however, many architects have draftspersons on staff.

Interior designers will work with their client to determine their needs and preferences. Interior designers will then provide advice and recommendations on space planning, renovations, window coverings, bed coverings, colour schemes, wall applications, furnishings, etc. Interior design services may include locating materials, furnishings, etc. at the best possible price and directing their client on the purchase of such items.

Underwriting Considerations:

Architectural firms may employ draftsmen to prepare drawings of their designs. If the primary business activity is architecture related, with the draftsmen in a support role, the entire operation would be classified under this industry, upon voluntary application.

This industry does not include businesses that build prototypes or engage in any manufacturing activities.

Businesses that specialize in the design, development and building of prototypes for testing and research are classified under the appropriate manufacturing classification on a voluntary basis. When these types of businesses further undertake to manufacture the product(s), the firm is viewed to have extended beyond the research and development stage into production and the operations would be classified under the appropriate manufacturing classification on a compulsory basis.

Companies that provide website design, development and maintenance may extend services to include web hosting. This service involves the provision of storage space for a client's website on servers (computers) owned or operated by the web host. These companies collect monthly or yearly fees from clients in exchange for the web hosting service. Web hosting offered in conjunction with website design or as a separate service is classified in this industry.

Web hosting services may also be provided by Internet Service Providers (ISP). These companies facilitate access to the World Wide Web. Any web hosting service provided by an ISP is classified with their overall primary business in industry 54501, Telecommunication Systems.

Businesses that provide graphic design services as one aspect of an overall promotional and communication program are classified under industry 86200, Advertising Agencies.

As architects and engineers are closely related, there are definite overlaps in the services provided. However, a clear distinction may be made regarding the education and title of the professional. Architects will have a degree of Master of Environmental Design (Architecture), while engineers will have a degree in Engineering (Civil/Electrical/Structural, etc.)

The determination of materials, maximum spans, etc. is a function of engineering (structural or civil), which is closely associated with this industry. The fundamental difference here between architects and engineers is that architects design and engineers determine if and how the design may be constructed and precisely what materials are required.

This industry also covers onsite supervision of construction projects, when conducted as an extension of the original architectural design. However, businesses that only provide visual inspection services, for quality assurance on construction or fabrication projects, are classified in industry 51506, Quality Control Services - Construct.

Interior design services, when offered in conjunction with retail sales, manufacturing, construction or construction supervision, should be viewed with respect to the other services and classified in the industry which best covers all of the business being conducted (e.g. industry 22901, Drapes/Linens - Mfg/Repair/Inst, industry 26101, Furniture Manufacturing and Repair, and industry 40405, Residential General Contractor).

Employers who evaluate, draft, design and prepare plans and specifications for construction are classified in industry 86400, Engineering.
