Operation Details:

Compulsory:
The operation of a weigh scale, similar to those run by the government are classified in this industry. These businesses provide a service to truck drivers, whereby the truck is weighed to ensure the vehicle does not exceed highway limits.

The types of services a Call Centre may offer are answering incoming (in-bound) telephone calls, making outgoing (out-bound) telephone calls, a combination of both incoming and outgoing (blended) telephone calls and/or product market research, such as customer satisfaction surveys and product surveys.

Postal outlets are compulsory in this classification, when operated as a stand-alone business. When operated in conjunction with another business, the business is classified based on the overall operations being conducted.

Optional:
Services in the industry may include but are not limited to: accounting, word and business data processing, telephone answering/paging, customs brokerage, income tax preparation, auditing, actuarial and statistical services.

Telephone soliciting is permitted but only as an information service; there is no sale of a product or service. Sales leads may only be passed on to an unrelated selling company.

This industry includes brokerage services not elsewhere classified, such as insurance, investment or stock brokers. Brokers act only as agents between two or more independent parties, and do not take title of, nor warranty or guarantee any commodity or service. Businesses may use an office, telephone, computers, and related business equipment in providing their service and may employ technical, sales, and office/administrative staff.

Land titles, corporate registry, vital statistics, motor vehicle licensing offices and casino advisors are included in this industry as optional undertakings. When these services are offered in conjunction with another business venture, these are deemed secondary activities and assume the compulsory/optional status of the other venture. Businesses offering motor vehicle registry and licensing services may also provide driver testing, which is incidental to the vehicle registry service. Other activities in this industry include mailing list maintenance; address verification/correction, etc. Employers providing mailing list services often have access to personal data on individuals (e.g. buying patterns, demographics), to assist businesses in focusing their advertising dollars on a specific target market. Underwriting Considerations:

Businesses that supply temporary office staff to a variety of clients are classified in Industry 86906 - Staffing Services - Clerical/Professional.

Businesses that design/develop custom and proprietary software for commercial, business/administration and recreational (games) applications are classified in Industry 86913 - Architects/Drafting/Design (on an optional basis) providing that hardware sales are not included with the proprietary software sales. Industry 86913 would also include companies performing web design and web hosting services. If hardware sales are included, the entire operations are classified in Industry 62300 - Office Equipment - Sales/Service (on a compulsory basis). Businesses that develop software for industrial process applications are classified in Industry 86400 - Engineering. Businesses that develop software for HVAC applications, in conjunction with manufacturing instruments, are included under Industry 38100 - Instrumentation - Mfg.

Businesses that create and sell the software and hardware for data mining or operate a data centre are classified in Industry 62300 - Office Equipment – Sales/Service (on a compulsory basis).

Technicians hired to manipulate and/or modify or perform troubleshooting on existing software or hardware (help desk) are classified in Industry 62300 - Office Equipment – Sales/Service (on a compulsory basis). Businesses that sell packaged software, perform computer support/updating/maintenance/troubleshooting are also classified in Industry 62300 (on a compulsory basis). Businesses that develop software packages for retail selling through mass marketing techniques are also classified in Industry 62300 (on a compulsory basis).

Businesses that have established a proprietary website for the purpose of bringing together buyers and sellers into an "electronic marketplace" are classified in Industry 28900 - Publishing. Revenue is derived from a commission-based percentage of product sales or by charging a fee to buyers or sellers for listing or viewing products on the website. Companies may also publish a paper version of the website but will not engage in any printing. If title is taken to any of the listed products, the entire business is underwritten in the appropriate retail classification.

Businesses which provide seismic data processing services are classified in Industry 86414 - Geological/Environmental Consulting or Industry 9200 - Seismic Survey.

Freight forwarding under this classification, is for office and administrative services only. This classification does not allow for any freight handling, warehousing or transportation services provided by the freight forwarder either directly or under subcontract arrangements. Overseas forwarding companies may be affiliated with the Canadian International Freight Forwarding Association (CIFFA).

Companies which bid or have contracts to move freight in continental North America and exclusively use lease operators or common carriers to provide transportation services are classified in the appropriate trucking classification.

Freight forwarding companies which specialize in moving freight throughout Canada, the U.S. and Mexico, principally by means of truck and rail are to be classified in Industry 50714 - General Trucking. Businesses may develop propriety software and offer services online where their customers (shippers) may make selections from listed carriers to coordinate/schedule deliveries or the trucking of goods. Proprietary software can be developed in-house and utilized by customers for an additional fee aside from actual delivery services. Businesses may solely use subcontract drivers or common carriers to provide delivery/trucking services. These companies retain principal responsibility for the shipping and are classified in the appropriate trucking classification.

Custom brokers (providing no freight forwarding activities) and brokers not elsewhere classified are included in this industry. Brokers act as agents and negotiate agreements between two independent third parties on a fee or commission basis. Brokers DO NOT take title to any commodity or service, receiving only fees or commissions from a third party for assuming the obligations and responsibilities of carrying out the purchase or sale on behalf of the third party. Brokerage services are generally specific to an industry and are to be classified in the industry being served.
