The testing may be of the destructive kind, where a product or material is handled by either being stretched, pounded, squeezed, etc. to determine strength or quality. The testing may be of the analytical kind, where the product or material is subjected to chemical or microscopic inspection to determine its composition and quality. Research may also involve visually inspecting materials for composite analysis.

Businesses may operate mobile laboratories in conjunction with their grounded facilities with related equipment and accessories.

Employers providing Research/Material Testing Labs services may employ field technicians, laboratory technicians, IT specialists, data analysts, and office and administrative staff.

Industrial research laboratories may also conduct research into new technology, processes, or materials for industrial applications.

Underwriting Considerations:

These labs would not be affiliated with any ongoing manufacturing operation.

The businesses in this industry may be required to go out into the field to collect samples for testing or they may have materials brought to them for testing or analysis. Employers who go into the field to obtain material for research (to produce reports only) and do not provide a laboratory service are better classified in industy 86414, Agricultural, Environmental, Forestry, Horticultural & Wildlife Consulting and Research Services.

Businesses which perform non-destructive testing and inspection services, when conducted on behalf of the principal as a third party, to ensure safety, quality and compliance control on such items as critical pieces of tools, equipment and materials are classified in industry 51502.

Businesses that provide independent third party building code inspections or pre-purchase inspections are classified in industry 86922.

Visual Inspections for quality assurance on an ongoing basis; on behalf of the project owner during a construction project; or in connection with the fabrication of pipe, piping systems, vessels, etc.; are classified in industry 51506, on a compulsory basis.

Industry Custom Pricing: Waiving Cost Relief Option

This industry has chosen to participate in Industry Custom Pricing effective January 1, 2012. Costs related to the aggravation of a pre-existing condition will not be removed from the experience record of employers classified in this industry. In return, the portion of premiums collected to fund retroactive cost relief has been removed from the industry rate, resulting in a reduction in WCB premium rates for the industry.
