This industry covers the front of stage and behind stage activities in presenting live art and cultural theatrical productions of plays, concerts, operas, ballets, recitals, etc.

Operation Details:

This industry includes organizations responsible for any aspect of scheduling, rehearsal, production, direction, choreography, costumes, set design, stage props, etc., of community, amateur and professional art and cultural presentations. Presentations most often include plays, but also references recitals, operas, ballet, etc.

Workers can include actors, entertainers, performers and individuals responsible for artistic direction, costume designs, props, choreography, marketing and administration. Individuals responsible for sound and lighting may be involved as well, but most often on amateur presentations. More involved or professional productions are obligated to use union members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) for stage hands, sound, lights, etc.

Underwriting Considerations:

Within this industry are entities and organizations that may operate a facility for staging their own productions, that simply rent facilities exclusively for the staging of live art and cultural productions, and those that are only involved in producing and presenting the theatrical productions.

Artists, entertainers, and performers operating as businesses are classified in industry 85914, Artists, Entertainers and Performers.

Stunt persons are not covered under WCA, refer to Policy 06-01 (part II).

Industry Custom Pricing: Waiving Cost Relief Option

This industry has chosen to participate in Industry Custom Pricing effective January 1, 2010. Costs related to the aggravation of a pre-existing condition will not be removed from the experience record of employers classified in this industry. In return, the portion of premiums collected to fund retroactive cost relief has been removed from the industry rate, resulting in a reduction in WCB premium rates for the industry.
