This industry includes businesses which operate ski hills, ski resorts or sightseeing gondolas.

Operation Details:

Compulsory:
Ski hill/resort operators use various types of mechanical equipment to transport skiers to the ski runs including; T-bar lifts, poma lifts, chairlifts, rope tows and gondolas.

Ski hills/resorts may employ ski patrols, medical staff, attendants for checking and cleaning the slopes, snow-making equipment operators, maintenance staff, snow grooming equipment operators, lift operators, ski instructors, parking lot attendants and bus drivers.

Some ski hills/resorts offer their patrons secondary services such as restaurant facilities and lounges, day care services, gift shops, equipment rentals, as well as accommodation facilities. These services are considered supportive or complementary to the basic operation of the ski hill or resort, and are usually provided to enhance the desirability of the resort facility. When provided, these incidental services are considered to be part of this industry.

Optional:
Ski instruction, ski schools and ski clubs conducted as a separate business from the ski hill would be classified in this industry on an optional basis.

Underwriting Considerations:

Employers operating sightseeing gondolas and chairlifts, that do not operate ski resorts, are also classified in this industry. Incidental activities such as food services and gift shops that are provided for the convenience of gondola and chairlift patrons, are also included in this industry.

Ski instruction or ski schools and ski clubs conducted as a separate business venture at arms length from a ski hill operation would be classified in this industry on a voluntary basis.

Ski patrols which are not operated by the ski resort but by for-profit businesses or charitable organizations should be referred to Underwriting.

Ski lifts, rope tows and the operation of sightseeing chairlifts and gondolas came under the Act on a compulsory basis effective January 1, 1976.
