Industry Code: 82800
This industry covers businesses that offer living accommodations, maid/laundry services, activity coordination, daily meal preparation, etc. exclusively for seniors.
Operation Details:
In Alberta there are 3 distinct types of senior's facilities:
- Lodges
- Enhanced lodges, and
- Independent apartment-like accommodations
'Lodges' describe facilities that provide room and board for seniors who are functionally independent or functionally independent with the aid of community-based services. These services may be provided by the resident, the resident's family, directly by the lodge or by the lodge through contracted services.
Services within these lodges include basic room furnishings, meals, housekeeping and linen, building security, 24-hour non-medical staff and enrichment services, such as the co-ordination of various activities both inside and outside the lodge.
'Enhanced lodges' will provide services as noted above, and may also provide some or all of the following:
- Medical support - medication management, personal care;
- Specialized care relating to Alzheimer/Dementia clinics;
- Contracted home care services; and
- Assistance in securing a bed in a continuing care facility.
Seniors' lodges, enhanced lodges and apartment-style accommodation for seniors may be government funded, privately funded or operated by a not-for-profit association or a management body. Privately run for-profit providers do not have income barriers and may offer a higher level of services based on user fees.
To be eligible for residency in any of these facilities an applicant must be 65 years of age, must demonstrate their low-income status (for most but not all facilities) and must undergo a needs assessment to determine their individual level of functional independence.
All employers in this industry are members of Continuing Care Safety Association (CCSA). Safety associations represent the interests of employers and promote workplace safety through education and other initiatives. Improved workplace safety can result in fewer claims and help lower premiums. A portion of premiums collected is allocated to the association to support these initiatives.
Underwriting Considerations:
Apartments designated for seniors that do not provide any enhanced services beyond the room they rent are properly classified in industry 89702, Property Management. Workers engaged will perform only building management and maintenance of the building and grounds.
However, a designated seniors' apartment that offers services related to managing the affairs of the tenant, including the provision of meals, regulated activity coordination, maid/laundry services, shuttle services, etc., will be appropriately assigned to industry 82800, Seniors' Supportive Living/Lodges.
Organizations that describe their business as "assisted living or designated assisted living" for seniors are appropriately classified in this industry, providing their residents are still able to maintain functional independence.
When medical services consist of 24-hour registered nursing, scheduled doctors' visits, intravenous drips, palliative care, etc., the operations are better described as Continuing Care, Industry 82808. In this institutionalized setting, patients are receiving daily scheduled and unscheduled medical attention from doctors and registered nurses and are no longer able to maintain functional independence.
