Industry Custom Pricing - CR

This industry includes dental laboratories, denture clinics and dental mechanics, businesses that custom manufacture prosthetics and orthotics, businesses who manufacture culture media and blood type determinants, and ophthalmic dispensing.

Operation Details:

Dental laboratories manufacture a variety of dental devices including crowns, bridges, braces, splints, dentures, etc. from molds received from private dental clinics. Dental laboratories do not engage in patient care, consultation, or examination.

Denture clinics and denturists, who are also known as dental mechanics, specialize in the manufacture and repair of denture plates. They do not offer any other services typical of dental laboratories. Denture clinics and denturists will take impressions of the patient's teeth, gums, and jaw prior to making the dentures. Once the dentures are made the denturist ensures the dentures fit the patient properly and make any necessary modifications.

Businesses in this industry may employ dental technicians to make the appliances. Manufacturing the various appliances includes the use of small electrical devices to mold and shape certain products, along with hand tools for scraping, pinching, etc., and ovens for curing.

Prosthetics (artificial limbs) are custom manufactured by certified personnel to suit the patient's medical condition. The process involves:

- designing a plastic impression of the desired artificial limb,
- creating a mold from the plastic impression,
- pouring plastic into the mold and then giving it time to set,
- laminating or coating the artificial limb with a resinous finish,
- medical staff working with the patient to ensure the fit of the prosthetic is comfortable, and
- educating the patient on the use and care of the product.

The limbs are held in place with belts, harnesses or suction. Some of the joints such as knees and ankles are purchased pre-fabricated.

Orthotics are either pre-fabricated products purchased off the shelf or custom manufactured and include orthopedic appliances, knee braces, ankle braces, etc. In addition, this profession includes the sale and fitting of pre-fabricated myoelectric hands/arms, which are realistic looking hands/arms attached by electrical wires to bones or muscles, enabling the patient to control the movement of the hands/arms.

The equipment used in this industry includes coating and casting equipment, grinder machinery, sewing machines and hand tools.

Culture media manufacturing requires importing dehydrated mixtures of chemicals and nutrients from the United States. Under sterilized conditions, these chemicals and nutrients are mixed with a liquid and gelatin base and poured into small plastic dishes. After the mixture hardens to a jelly form, the dish is covered with a lid, packaged and held in a cooler until shipped to a hospital or a laboratory. The culture media is used to sustain bacteria and germs for research and medical purposes.

The manufacture of blood type determinants is a laboratory process which consists of combining natural sugars in sequence, using various complicated chemistry procedures to duplicate a human chemical substance. The process combines various powders and sugars to produce a liquid product. Through the use of the three natural sugars, a determinant can be produced for each of the twelve different blood groups. These determinants are predominantly sold to the Red Cross and used for blood group analysis.

Work in connection with optical equipment may include grinding, surfacing, and fitting eyeglass lenses in frames; preparing contact lenses; and servicing eye measuring machines. This work is basically bench work using small hand or power tools.

In addition to preparing the prescription, they will also do fitting, adjusting, or adapting of the appliances to the needs of the intended wearer in accordance with an ophthalmologist's or optometrist's prescription, or without prescription when lenses are duplicated with no change in their refractive value.

This industry will include businesses with same day or one hour service with on-site labs, as well as businesses which contract out the service or have centralized labs serving more than one retail location. Businesses will often have an extensive selection of frames on display and may sell other complimentary items.

Underwriting Considerations:

Employers involved in the manufacturing or repair of prostheses or orthotics may also sell and rent medical aids such as wheel chairs, canes and crutches; these activities, when incidental to the overall operations of the employer, are covered in this industry. Employers, where the sale and rental of medical aids is the primary component of the overall operations, are classified in industry 33901, Medical Equipment – Sale/Svce.

Businesses that specialize in manufacturing orthopedic footwear and foot supports would be classified in this industry. The manufacturing of orthopedic footwear, in conjunction with manufacturing and repair of other footwear, would not be eligible for separate classifications and the entire business would be classified in industry 24900.

With respect to culture media and blood type determinants, this is a laboratory activity expressly for the purpose of manufacturing these elements. General laboratory activities, relative to medical research, should be classified in industry 82500 on a voluntary basis.

Ophthalmic dispensing includes employers who prepare or dispense ophthalmic appliances (e.g. eyeglasses, contact lenses) by interpreting ophthalmic prescriptions. When an optometrist operates a dispensary separate from the optometry office, the dispensary is under the Act and must be registered here as a compulsory industry.

* Effective January 1, 2011, this industry also includes operations previously classified in industries 37401, 38101 and 38102 (due to the 2011 industry consolidations).
