This classification covers the operation of a variety of private medical and dental offices, clinics and laboratories which are operated independently of Regional Health Authorities.

Operation Details:

This industry includes physicians who operate a private practice, activities which include examination, diagnosis and treatment, either at the doctor's office or at walk-in clinics or medi-centres.

This industry also includes a variety of medical and dental services such as orthodontics, optometry, psychology, speech pathology, audiology, hypnotism, chiropractic, naturopathic and dietary consulting.

Private clinics that offer minor surgical procedures are included under this classification, provided the services are limited to day surgery which do not require overnight or extended treatment.

Midwifery clinics are also classified in this industry. Midwives offer primary care to healthy pregnant women and their newborn babies from early pregnancy, through labour and birth and into postpartum.

Primary Care Networks (PCNs) are not-for-profit entities established to improve the delivery of primary care and are classified in this industry. A PCN is comprised of a multidisciplinary team including physicians, nurses, dieticians, social workers and pharmacists. The services provided are an extension of family practice. They include primary care, health promotion, disease prevention and management. Physicians working in a PCN will direct-bill AB Health & Wellness for their services. The non-profit corporation is not under the Regional Health Authorities Act.

Businesses which specialize in clinical testing, research laboratories and veterinary pathology, are also included in this classification.

Businesses that sell and service hearing aids, and provide a prescription service for the hard of hearing, are also included in this industry. Sales, deliveries and adjustments to hearing aids may include service calls to the customer's residence.

The types of workers common to this classification include nurses, nurses' aides, x-ray and lab technicians, clerical staff, receptionists, dental assistants, dental hygienists and business managers.

Underwriting Considerations:

Coverage for workers in this industry is voluntary and optional personal coverage is available for the physicians who own the business. Physicians who operate their own private practices may have visiting or operating privileges at a hospital or health care centre to treat their own patients. These visiting and operating activities, when conducted as part of a private practice, are included under this industry classification.

This classification includes the dispensing of ophthalmic appliances, when done under the direct supervision of an optometrist, within an optometrist's office. When an optometrist operates a dispensary separate from the optometry practice, the dispensing is under the Act and must be registered as a compulsory industry in industry 82700, Manufacturing of Health Related Products.

Services referred to as aesthetics are evolving and expanding. Cosmetic surgery and treatments which are required to be administered by a licensed physician would be covered in this industry when restricted to such services. Businesses which offer these services in conjunction with other non-medical aesthetic or beauty treatment services, generally administered by aestheticians, would be classified in industry 87200.

The operation of a dental laboratory, denture clinic or dental mechanics are classified in industry 82700, Dental labs and denture clinics (dental mechanics).

All operations by Regional Health Authorities are compulsory and classified in the appropriate health care industry.

Privatized health care services related to long term care, home nursing and hospitals with overnight stays, are compulsory and classified in the appropriate health care industry.
