Zoos/Game Farms

Industry Code: 80703

Compulsory/Exempt
Industry Custom Pricing - CR

This industry includes, on a compulsory basis, zoos which are operated independently from a city or municipality.

Game farms are also included on a voluntary basis.

Operation Details:

The purpose of zoos and game farms is to place wild and/or exotic animals on exhibit to the general public. Included is the study and breeding of animals. Game farms have mainly large herd animals and cats which are kept in fenced areas, whereas zoos will have a combination of large and smaller exotic animals kept in cages and pens. This may include animals from several species including birds, reptiles, mammals, fish, etc.

Both may employ zoologists and other professionals such as veterinaries, along with workers to operate concessions and booths, clean cages and corrals, feed animals, take tickets, perform maintenance, etc. Veterinary services, when performed in conjunction with the zoo or game farm, form part of this industry.

Underwriting Considerations:

The operation of zoos came under the Act on a compulsory basis effective January 1, 1976. Game farms remain exempt, although coverage is available on a voluntary basis. Zoos are generally operated by a separate society such as the zoo in Calgary, which is operated by the Calgary Zoological Society.

The operation of a petting zoo, whether stationary or mobile (for malls, private functions, etc.), would be included here on a compulsory basis.

Industry Custom Pricing: Waiving Cost Relief Option

This industry has chosen to participate in Industry Custom Pricing effective January 1, 2010. Costs related to the aggravation of a pre-existing condition will not be removed from the experience record of employers classified in this industry. In return, the portion of premiums collected to fund retroactive cost relief has been removed from the industry rate, resulting in a reduction in WCB premium rates for the industry.
