Industry Code: 80700

Compulsory
Industry Custom Pricing - CR

This industry includes Library Boards which operate the majority of public libraries under the authority of the Libraries Act. For example, the public libraries in Edmonton and Calgary are under the direction of a library board and are not covered under the city"s account.

Smaller libraries are set up and operated in the same manner. Funding is acquired through municipalities such as towns or villages, and they share coordinated services through "regional" library systems.

Operation Details:

Libraries maintain a collection of books, periodicals, newspapers, videos, cassettes, discs and other articles and objects of educational, cultural or artistic value for the purpose of circulation or reference. Libraries include branch libraries, central libraries, reading rooms and bookmobiles.

The operation of a library involves purchasing books, periodicals, newspapers, etc., and keeping them in a proper state of preservation and repair, as well as in proper order for easy reference.

Workers may include librarians, administrators, purchasers and part time help for stocking shelves, etc.

Underwriting Considerations:

Often, library services are provided through schools, universities, etc., and are part of the overall operation of the educational institution. A library, to be classified in this industry, must maintain autonomy from any other service or program, including affiliation with a school, university, technical institute, etc.

The operation of a library was brought under the Act on a compulsory basis effective January 1, 1977.

Industry Custom Pricing: Waiving Cost Relief Option

This industry has chosen to participate in Industry Custom Pricing effective January 1, 2010. Costs related to the aggravation of a pre-existing condition will not be removed from the experience record of employers classified in this industry. In return, the portion of premiums collected to fund retroactive cost relief has been removed from the industry rate, resulting in a reduction in WCB premium rates for the industry.
