This industry includes universities which are post secondary educational institutions offering undergraduate and graduate courses to local, regional and international students. Universities are large educational facilities offering degree courses in academic studies including medicine, history, business, etc. and are established under the Universities Act.

Operation Details:

Universities include administrative and support staff, custodians, parking facilities, groundskeepers, security personnel, librarians, professors, coaches, etc.

Universities are situated on large campuses encompassing many buildings and facilities for learning, studying, administration, facilities maintenance, etc.

Research activities may be conducted in the areas of medicine, horticulture, etc.

Underwriting Considerations:

Some universities offer education in conjunction with a public health facility, such as internships through the University of Alberta Hospital which is located on the University campus. Student interns are workers of the hospital as they are paid by, and are integral to the operation of the health facility.

Prior to January 1, 1976, universities were covered under the Act by deposit account; however, since then, accounts have been established and workers are covered on a premium basis.

All employees of the university are covered, including teachers and professors, regardless of the subject they teach (see General Regulations, Section 3).

A students' association at a university is not required to have coverage under the Act because it is an 'Association which does not operate as an industry' under the General Regulations. However, if a students' association applies for voluntary coverage, they are classified in the same industry as the educational institution that their membership attends. Until 1993, students' associations were classified in industry 85921, Operation of Students Union Buildings.

Industry Custom Pricing: Modified Experience Rating and Waiving Cost Relief Option

This industry has chosen to participate in Industry Custom Pricing. Effective January 1, 2014, employers in this industry participate in the Waiving Cost Relief option and the Modified Experience Rating option.
