This industry includes post secondary institutes established under the Technical Institutes Act, which provide theory as well as hands on practical experience in the areas of trade apprenticeships, business, adult learning, etc.

Operation Details:

Technical institutes focus on theory as well as practical, hands-on training for all trades including mechanics, electrical, cabinet making, chefs, dental assisting, etc. All registered apprenticeship programs require annual training at a technical institute to complete the apprenticeship program.

Institutes of Technology will also provide academic programs for business, sciences, commerce, etc.

Other activities include librarians, counsellors, janitorial staff, groundskeepers, security, secretaries, registrars, etc.

Underwriting Considerations:

Prior to April 1, 1982, Institutes of Technology were covered under the Act by deposit account, under the Advanced Education Department of the Provincial Government. Since that date, accounts have been established and workers are covered on a premium basis.

All employees of the institute of technology are covered, including teachers and professors, regardless of what subject they teach (see General Regulations, Section 3).

A students' association at an institute of technology is not required to have coverage under the Act because it is an 'Association which does not operate as an industry' under the General Regulations. However, if a students' association applies for voluntary coverage, they are to be classified in the same industry as the educational institution in which their membership attends. Until 1993, students' associations were classified in industry 85921, Operation of Students Union Buildings.

Industrial training schools, which are not Institutes of Technology established under the Technical Institutes Act, are classified in industry 80302, Industrial Training Schools.

Industry Custom Pricing: Modified Experience Rating and Waiving Cost Relief Option

This industry has chosen to participate in Industry Custom Pricing. Effective January 1, 2014, employers in this industry participate in the Waiving Cost Relief option and the Modified Experience Rating option.

Under the Waiving Cost Relief option, costs related to the aggravation of a pre-existing condition will not be removed from the experience record of employers classified in this industry. In return, the portion of premiums collected to fund retroactive cost relief has been removed from the industry rate, resulting in a reduction in WCB premium rates for the industry.

With Modified Experience Rating option, the following experience rating features will be used in determining the premium rate for employers in the Large Employer Experience Rating Plan:

-Maximum discount or surcharge of 60%
-Maximum participation of 100%
-Maximum experience used of 100%
