This industry is intended to cover the very few salt mining operations that exist in Alberta.
Operation Details:
Salt is brought up from the ground in much the same way that oil is. A hole must be drilled and casing set. Water is forced down to dissolve the salt and then brine is brought to the surface through pressure.
The brine is treated in large tanks to remove iron, chlorides, calcium, magnesium etc. The water is then removed by vacuum and the resulting granules are again washed with brine to remove gypsum, then dried on rotary filters, screened and pumped to storage bins.
Underwriting Considerations:
This industry is exclusive to the mining and processing of salt.
Industry Custom Pricing: Waiving Cost Relief Option
This industry has chosen to participate in Industry Custom Pricing effective January 1, 2010. Costs related to the aggravation of a pre-existing condition will not be removed from the experience record of employers classified in this industry. In return, the portion of premiums collected to fund retroactive cost relief has been removed from the industry rate, resulting in a reduction in WCB premium rates for the industry.
