Shoe stores may sell merchandise related to the maintenance of shoes, as well as accessories such as handbags and shoe clips.

In some businesses, alterations are performed as an ancillary activity to service the purchasing customer. This is an enhancement to the retail sale of clothing. When the alterations are performed on the same premises as the goods sold, alterations are considered incidental.

Employers whose primary business is the retail sale of fur coats and garments (also known as furriers) may offer climate-controlled storage, minor repairs and alterations, and are classified in industry 66900, Clothing and Shoe Stores. However, if an employer's primary business is the cleaning and climate-controlled storage of furs and woolens, the business is classified in industry 87401, Dry Cleaners.

Generally, shoe stores do not provide shoe repair services. Businesses that offer a shoe repair service are classified in industry 24900, Clothing & Leather Goods - Mfg/Repair.
