This industry covers the repairing of body damage and/or providing of aesthetic repair, protection or detailing of vehicles, and the decorative electroplating of automotive parts such as bumpers, grills, running boards. However, industrial hard chrome plating is not covered.

Operation Details:

Bodies are reconstructed, repaired or customized, including realignment of bent frames; repair, replacement and/or installation of glass, upholstery, and pinstriping, adding rubber bumpers and accessories such as running boards, visors, sun roofs, etc.

This industry also includes specialty shops that concentrate on particular segments of the overall industry: van customizing, customized paint shops and pinstriping, vinyl top repair, windshield repair or replacement businesses, frame straightening, spraying rubberized material in pick-up truck boxes, etc. Some of these activities may be provided as a mobile service. Automobile laundries, polishing, and rustproofing/undercoating are activities geared to cleaning and protecting a vehicle and are also in this industry.

The decorative electroplating of automobole parts involves the cleaning of parts, and any existing chrome or nickel is removed by a cyanide bath, sandblasting and grinding. The parts are dipped in a series of tanks, and electically charged in order to create the necessary chemical reaction.

Businesses in the industry may also sell extensive parts and complementary body shop supplies and accessories.

Businesses may use garage-type facilities, hoists/small cranes, dollies, alignment machines, tanks, handtools, welders, paint booths and sprayers; and may stock an assortment of chemicals. They may employ autobody mechanics, technical staff, labourers, sales/estimators, and office/administrative staff.

Underwriting Considerations:

Body shop services provided by auto/truck dealerships are incidental to the dealership business.

Mobile operations which clean and paint mobile equipment, tools, trucks, cars, etc., prior to auctions sales, are classified in industry 42139.

Industry 65800 covers the decorative/bright chroming or electroplating of auto parts. Industrial coating services (which includes industrial hard chrome plating) are classified under industry 30403.

Businesses that sell and/or install auto glass only are classified in this industry. Businesses that sell and/or install auto glass and also deal in commercial plate glass are classified in industry 42121.

Industry Custom Pricing: Waiving Cost Relief Option

This industry has chosen to participate in Industry Custom Pricing effective January 1, 2009. Costs related to the aggravation of a pre-existing condition will not be removed from the experience record of employers classified in this industry. In return, the portion of premiums collected to fund retroactive cost relief has been removed from the industry rate, resulting in a reduction in WCB premium rates for the industry.
