Gas Bars/Car Wash, Retail - No Servicing

Industry Code: 65406

Compulsory

Retail gas bars and/or car washes, operated as stand-alone businesses or in combination with each other and serving the general motoring public, form part of this industry. Automotive servicing performed in conjunction with a gas bar and/or car wash is not included as part of this industry.

Operation Details:

Retail gas bars may be self-serve and/or full service. Gas may be pumped, oil and other fluid levels checked and topped up, and air filters checked and changed. No servicing beyond these activities is permitted. Retail gas bars commonly offer car washes and may be automatic drive-in or drive-through or self-service wand wash systems. Car washes operated as a stand-alone business are also underwritten in this industry.

Retail gas bars also commonly sell 'snack food' or "concession" items such as soft drinks, potato chips, chocolate bars and cigarettes.

These businesses may maintain equipment such as wash bays, snack-bar concessions that employ clerks and/or maintenance staff for their own facilities, labourers, and office and administrative staff.

This industry includes key lock or cardlock systems (the sale of fuels with the use of a security card or key, allowing 24 access to the pumps) and all related administrative and accounting services.

Underwriting Considerations:

Retail gas sales and/or car washes are considered incidental when performed in conjunction with a predominant business venture. For example, for a business whose prime business focus is an automotive laundry or detail shop, the overall operation is classified in industry 65800.

Gas Bar vs. Food Store Underwriting Considerations -
Businesses selling retail gas and food items, such as dairy products (butter and milk), bread, fruit, vegetables, canned foods and confectionary items, beyond the "snack food" items listed above, are referred to as "convenience stores" and are classified in industry 63100, with the sale of gas being incidental to the overall business. Businesses may also sell retail gas and food store items as listed above while operating a "fast food" counter, cooking and selling such items as hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries, etc., or a "coffee bar", selling different flavours of coffee and baking doughnuts, muffins, etc. They do not typically have a sit down area for customers. When a single owner operates a "fast food" counter in conjunction with retail gas sales and a food store, all the activities are considered part of the overall business and classified in industry 63100. When a third party operates the "fast food" counter, they should be classified in industry 87501, Restaurant.

Automotive Servicing Underwriting Considerations -
Businesses that are in the business of repairing and servicing cars and light trucks, and also sell gas - both self-serve and full service, are classified in industry 65400. Repairs range from routine oil changes, tune-ups and tire repair, to extensive repairs including, but not limited to, engine, transmission, brake, muffler and radiator repair. Repair work is performed by licensed mechanics.

Oil Company-Operated Gas Bar Underwriting Considerations -
Large oil companies may on occasion operate retail gas bars/car washes. This usually occurs over a temporary period, when an oil company runs an outlet while searching for a new franchisee. This activity is considered incidental to the overall business activity of the oil company. In cases where an oil company sells gas through retail outlets and is the owner/operator of the retail outlets as a "going concern", the oil company will require an additional industry for retail gas sales, industry 65406.

Franchisee-Operated Gas Bar(s) Underwriting Considerations -
Franchisees operating a single-location gas bar, which may offer gas sales and any combination of car wash, snack bar food stores, and service station, are underwritten based on the operation of the single location.

Franchisees operating multiple-location gas bars, which may be gas sales combined with any combination of gas sales, car washes, snack bars, food stores or service stations, should be underwritten on the basis of the overall operations of all the locations operated by the franchisee.

Gas bars that operate within an independently-owned franchise chain may offer services that differ from one location to the next. These individually-owned franchises are underwritten on the basis of the individual services provided.
