Industry Code: 62908
Garden centres sell plants and all the accessories associated with the maintenance of the yard and garden on a retail basis. This classification includes garden centres, which also operate complementary greenhouses.
This industry also includes businesses that purchase and resell coal and/or wood.
Operation Details:
Garden centres are generally open year round, however the sale of horticultural products peaks during the months of May, June and July. Garden centres that do not grow will buy horticultural products directly from producers and sell them to consumers. The horticultural products in these retail stores see very quick turnaround and there is not a lot of time or work dedicated to maintaining the plants. The retail activities undertaken in a garden centre include ordering, shipping/receiving, pricing, stocking and selling. The product line may include plants, trees, shrubs, sod, bagged potting soil, mulch, fertilizer, weed control, sand, sawdust, garden furniture, yard and garden tools and other merchandise such as giftware, novelty and home decor items.
Garden centres with complementary greenhouses are restricted to growing plants primarily to support their main retail sales business. The growing season for a retail garden centre with a greenhouse is typically shorter than a wholesale greenhouse with the majority of staff working in the retail end of the business rather than the production end. If a greenhouse is part of the main retail business, growing activities include filling trays with soil, seeding, transplanting, weeding, pruning, watering and harvesting.
Other services that may be found in a garden centre include full service flower shops, landscape design consultation and delivery. Businesses in this industry may also offer garden expertise and instructional garden and/or craft seminars. Some garden centres will also sell bulk landscaping product (sand, rock and/or shale) but this would be considered incidental to the garden centre's overall retail focus of plant/hard goods. Most garden centres will sell bagged landscaping product. Some mobile equipment will be used to load and handle materials.
Coal/wood yards are classified in this industry. Coal may be purchased in bulk by the truck or railway car load, or in bags. The coal may be sold in bulk or bags to the yard, or delivered to the customer. Wood may be purchased already split, or in cut lengths (roughly 18 inches). Often these businesses may do the splitting which requires some form of hydraulically operated splitting machine.
Underwriting Considerations:
Greenhouses, whose production of plants, vegetables and/or flowers is generally year round with product grown primarily for wholesale purposes, will be classified in industry 01800, Greenhouses/Market Gardens.
Small seasonal greenhouses that grow bedding plants for retail sale to the general public for spring gardening are classified in industry 62908 Garden Centres.
A garden centre with a greenhouse and a market garden is considered one business and is classified in industry 01800 on a compulsory basis, unless the employer can meet the policy for multiple classifications.
This industry also includes Christmas tree sales which includes setting up the sales lot and the sale, but not the harvesting of the trees. Tree nurseries (grow trees and have ancillary goods for sale) are classified in industry 01904, Tree and Shrub Nurseries.
Home improvement centres sell various building materials, tools, equipment, lumber (often cutting lumber) and other home improvement or beautification goods for the home and are classified in industry 25403, whereas the Garden Supply Centre is selling plants and accessories normally dedicated to the yard and garden.
Florists' primary focus is the selling of fresh cut flowers, silk plants and accessories such as vases, cards, etc., and are classified in industry 69200. They do not sell garden supply goods or gardening equipment.
Businesses involved predominately in the sale of bulk landscaping supplies (gravel, shale, bark, decorative rock) are classified in industry 40604.
The processing and packaging of horticultural and landscape related product such as peat moss, mulch, wood chips and soil should be classified in the most appropriate manufacturing industry.
No harvesting or cutting down of trees is allowed in this industry. If a business is engaged in harvesting or cutting down trees, they are classified in industry 03100.
