The equipment sold generally includes after sales servicing, although providing leases, rentals and loaners may be involved with general maintenance contracts and the sale of prewritten or standard software packages. Businesses that provide strictly custom servicing/troubleshooting/maintenance on a customer's premises or in a shop (help desk) are also included in this industry. This industry also includes companies that specialize in configuring (networking) computers, servers, peripheral office devices or consulting on computer security requirements (firewalls), etc.

Retail phone stores, most often located in retail and commercial areas such as malls, are also included in this industry. These businesses only focus on the sale/rental/lease of personal/consumer communications equipment such as cellular or digital phones and pagers, and also sell long-distance communication packages.

Businesses may utilize delivery/service vehicles, store/warehouse, handtools, parts counter/department, and may employ technical staff, sales/clerks, labourers, and office/administrative staff.

Computer programmers who are eligible for their own accounts and are hired to develop software by writing computer code for business processes (management systems, accounting systems, human resource system, etc.) would be classified in Industry 86913 - Architects/Drafting/Design on an optional basis. These businesses may troubleshoot for clients who have purchased the software and may very infrequently sell related hardware.

Coverage for businesses that design/develop custom and proprietary software for their customers is optional and would also be classified in Industry 86913 - Architects/Drafting/Design on an optional basis.

The development of software used in an industrial/commercial process application (product enhancements, flow control systems, etc., and any computer application that assists in the production or enhancement of efficiency of a plant or facility), is classified in Industry 86400 - Engineering.

Internet cafés that sell internet time and have food service or a coffee bar are classified in Industry 87501 - Restaurants/Catering. If the business sells computer (internet) time without the sale of food or drink; it is classified in Industry 62300.

Phone stores are only permitted to sell retail personal communication equipment and devices, and service the same, and no other electronic equipment. In order to be classified in this industry, a retail store front operation must be conducted, and sales are of individual products or items to the end user - the consumer.

Businesses that sell and service mobile and two-way radio communication systems or businesses that sell partial or complete telephone systems (not retail items for consumers) are classified in Industry 42160 - Electronic Equipment - Sales/Service.

This industry does not include the sale of office furniture, cabinets, etc., which is classified in Industry 64200 - Department/General Stores.

Industry Custom Pricing: Waiving Cost Relief Option

This industry has chosen to participate in Industry Custom Pricing effective January 1, 2012. Costs related to the aggravation of a pre-existing condition will not be removed from the experience record of employers classified in this industry. In return, the portion of premiums collected to fund retroactive cost relief has been removed from the industry rate, resulting in a reduction in WCB premium rates for the industry.
