Public Warehousing

Industry Code: 52700

Compulsory

This industry is restricted to those employers that operate warehouse facilities and generate a majority of their revenue from the custom storage of goods. These companies are generally referred to as public warehouses and primarily serve out of province manufacturers which require an immediate supply of product in Alberta to supply local retail markets.

Operation Details:

There are generally two distinct types of public warehousing. Companies may service the dry goods market warehousing non perishable food products, grocery and department store items, liquor products, chemicals, housewares, appliances, prescription drugs, etc. Other companies will serve the perishable food market, primarily meat and dairy products, which requires the use of refrigerated or cold storage facilities.

Regardless of the market, operations are basically the same. These employers will generally operate massive warehouse facilities, receiving product, placing it into storage and recording inventory, then picking and consolidating orders for shipment to local retailers.

Product to be warehoused, is shipped to the warehouse by the product owner or manufacturer via common carrier, usually truck or rail. Public warehouse companies do not provide transportation to their warehouse however will arrange for local delivery of the warehoused product when it is required by local retailers. Local transportation may be provided through owned trucks, leased operators or common carriers.

Underwriting Considerations:

The key features of this industry are that public warehouse firms are not handling owned product and there is storage of the product and fees for such storage rather than providing in transit or warehouse handling as part of a transportation service.
