Cathodic Protection Service

Industry Code: 51504

Compulsory

Cathodic protection refers to the measures taken to prevent negative charges from building, which are produced by fluid such as oil as it runs through a pipe or pipeline. The friction creates a negative charge build-up which causes corrosion in the pipe.

Operation Details:

A trench is dug near the pipeline and anodes are attached to wires on or near the pipe. A positive charge through the anodes counteracts the negative charge in the pipe, which prevents corrosion.

Employers may use trucks and smaller excavation equipment, electrical devices and apparatus; and employ technical staff, laborers, sales/estimators and administrative staff.

All employers in this industry are members of the Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA). Safety associations represent the interests of employers and promote workplace safety through education and other initiatives. Improved workplace safety can result in fewer claims and help lower premiums. A portion of premiums collected is allocated to the association to support these initiatives.
