Industry Code: 51502
This industry involves periodic non-destructive testing (NDT) and inspection procedures. The purpose is to ensure safety, quality and compliance control of critical pieces of tools, equipment and materials.
Operation Details:
Non-destructive tests (NDT) provide a permanent record of compliance and early detection of defects in materials and workmanship. Often, this periodic inspection is conducted during various stages of the fabrication, construction or maintenance of components and facilities in the oil and gas, construction, pulp and paper, and power and utility sectors, on pipe, piping systems, towers, steel and concrete structures, etc. NDT methods include magna flux (magnetic particle), x-ray, gamma ray, radiographic or ultrasonic (sound waves).
Activities may include surveillance and testing as a maintenance function on existing facilities. This may include evaluations of cranes and their supports in fabrication shops, and examinations and determinations on piping systems, vessels, valves and other ‘critical’ pieces of equipment or components in plants. Evaluations are sometimes done for buyers, and for government certification of mobile, overhead and stationary lifting equipment. Additionally, employers may develop, implement and administer quality control and verification programs including test witnessing and evaluations.
Businesses may use various handtools, meters, gauges, and non-destructive exam equipment, pen, clipboard, radio/cell-phone, and trucks; and may employ technical staff, engineers, sales/estimators, and office/administrative staff.
All employers in this industry are members of Energy Safety Canada (ESC). Safety associations represent the interests of employers and promote workplace safety through education and other initiatives. Improved workplace safety can result in fewer claims and help lower premiums. A portion of premiums collected is allocated to the association to support these initiatives.
Underwriting Considerations:
Businesses may offer visual inspection services in conjunction with their NDT operation. Visual inspections independent and exclusive of NDT, when conducted on behalf of the principal as a third party, is classified in Quality Control Services (industry 51506). When quality control services or supervision is provided directly to the construction firm, such as a general contractor, the classification is the same as the contracted firm.
