Industry Code: 51500
This classification describes businesses that clean pipelines to maintain and improve transmission through the pipeline, on behalf of pipeline owners in the energy sector.
Operation Details:
The cleaning of pipelines is generally done through a process known as 'pigging'. Rubber or plastic instruments of different shapes and sizes are placed into the pipeline at permanent launching sites at various intervals along it. The 'pigs' are forced down the line either by the natural flow of the product or by artificial pressure created using compressed nitrogen. The pigs scrape the inside of the pipeline removing paraffin wax, dirt and other debris built up on the inside walls. Pigs travel a predetermined distance and are then removed from the line.
Businesses may utilize trucks and accessories, and may employ operators, technical staff, labourers, sales/estimators and office/administrative staff.
Underwriting Considerations:
Pigging is a service exclusive to the operation of pipelines and this classification is meant to cover only the internal cleaning of a transmission pipeline. This industry does not include cleaning of pipelines under construction, which is classified in industry 40905 or cleaning of internal piping systems such as gas plants, refineries, etc., which is classified in industry 9902. Pipeline companies may perform this procedure themselves, and it is considered an incidental maintenance function to the overall operation of the pipeline.
Industry Custom Pricing: Waiving Cost Relief Option
This industry has chosen to participate in Industry Custom Pricing effective January 1, 2010. Costs related to the aggravation of a pre-existing condition will not be removed from the experience record of employers classified in this industry. In return, the portion of premiums collected to fund retroactive cost relief has been removed from the industry rate, resulting in a reduction in WCB premium rates for the industry.
