Industry Code: 50607
This industry includes businesses that operate railway transportation systems, including passenger and freight services.
Operation Details:
Railway transportation businesses may haul any type of commodity as long as it is by rail. Businesses that operate sightseeing tours, using railway transportation, are also classified in this industry.
The maintenance or repair and construction of railroad tracks, when performed in conjunction with the overall operation of a railway business, forms part of this industry.
Employers that exclusively test and/or recondition rail tracks are also included in this industry. The testing of rail tracks is performed by using a self propelled car containing electronic instruments to measure the steel tracks. These instruments record thickness, wear, alignment, stress, flaws or cracks, etc. and this information is compiled and passed to the engineering department of the railway company for analysis and follow-up. The reconditioning of rail tracks follows a similar process as the one described above. Grinding wheels are located on the bottom of special railcars, which contain computerized controls. These cars are pulled along the tracks by a locomotive and the track is reconditioned by grinding it a fraction of an inch.
Underwriting Considerations:
Various contractors may be hired to perform activities within the railway system, generally this contract work will be classified based on the services provided. For example, businesses hired to restore railway coaches are classified under industry 40401 - Construction Trade Services - NEC, businesses hired to restore railway ties are classified under industry 25100 - Sawmills and businesses hired to dismantel abandoned rail lines are classified under industry 40604 - Mobile Equipment Operations. However, each contractor is underwritten based on its own merits and the actual work that is being performed for the railway company.
If businesses are hired by a railway firm for other services such as the cleaning of rail cars, please consult with the Classification unit regarding the appropriate classification to be assigned. In addition, if a business is operating a railway line, but is also operating a trucking service in conjunction with the railway, contact the Classification unit for review.
