This industry covers specialized flight services including air search and rescue, aerial inspection and surveys, reconnaissance, advertising, etc., usually using smaller fixed wing aircraft. Also covered are flying clubs and businesses offering flying training, recreational flying services and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAVs) also known as drones.

Operation Details:

Compulsory:
Employers in this industry provide aerial application of chemicals or distribution of other materials from the aircraft. It includes agricultural flying, aerial pest control, spraying, seeding and reseeding, forest cultivation and fish cultivation; for the purpose of inhibiting and destroying insect life and other forms of organisms injurious to plants, crops or forests or to foster the growth of crops, forests or fish.

Businesses using aircrafts for fire suppression, fire prevention, and forest fire protection are classified in this industry. Also included are frost prevention, water pumping, forest control, hail suppression, rain making, fog dispersal and cloud seeding services.

Flying training is a service that instructs a person in the art and science of pilotage and the operation and navigation of aircraft, these services are part of this industry.

This industry also covers businesses providing recreational flying services. Recreational flying are flights that originate and terminate at the same place without landing at any other place for the purpose of taking on or discharging passengers, and that are:

1. Flown over a standard course that has been advertised by the carriers,
2. Conducted for the sole purpose of the recreation of the passengers, and
3. Includes sightseeing and parachute jumping.

This industry will also cover businesses that offer unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) also known as drones. UAVs typically have a ground-based controller and a system of communications either by remote control or autonomous onboard computer. UAVs have applications across various sectors and the services provided can be diverse in nature (aerial photography, commercial and motion picture film-making, geological mapping, product deliveries, remote sensing and surveillance, thermal imaging, etc).

Optional:
Photography businesses which both own the aircraft and provide a photography service (revenue generated from the sale of photographs), specifically related to scenic aerial photography, are included in this industry on an optional basis. Businesses that supply aircraft/pilots are providing a flying service and would be classified in the appropriate air services classification on a compulsory basis.

Underwriting Considerations:

When businesses own their own aircraft and use this aircraft for their own business purposes, it is considered to be part of the business' overall operation and they do not require an additional classification.

Businesses which exclusively provide emergency air ambulance services, and employ medical personnel such as nurses and emergency medical technicians are classified in Industry 82100 - Health Care Services – Alberta Health Services. Businesses which provide only the medically-equipped aircraft and do not employ medical personnel are classified in the appropriate air service industry.

Aircraft ground services such as baggage handling, aircraft refueling or aircraft maintenance, independent of an airline, are classified in Industry 50200 - Aircraft - Ground Support Services.

Industry Custom Pricing: Waiving Cost Relief Option

This industry has chosen to participate in Industry Custom Pricing effective January 1, 2009. Costs related to the aggravation of a pre-existing condition will not be removed from the experience record of employers classified in this industry. In return, the portion of premiums collected to fund retroactive cost relief has been removed from the industry rate, resulting in a reduction in WCB premium rates for the industry.
