Industry Code: 42151

Compulsory

This industry includes business that supply and install exterior finishing materials such as siding, soffits, fascia, and eavestrough and includes corrugated metal (cladding). Operation Details:

This classification describes any combination of siding, eavestrough, soffit, fascia, and awning installation service, including steel cladding installations on building exteriors, over entranceways and on roof tops. Larger structures do not normally require eavestrough or soffit, hence, this installation is usually restricted to homes and smaller buildings.

Cutting, forming and bending often takes place on-site. Ladders and scaffolding may be used at higher levels on the exterior. Depending on the material; bolting, riveting, nails and screws may be used in installation. Businesses may use shears, cutters, hand tools, ladders, scaffolds, trucks, forklifts, and cranes; and may employ technical staff, laborers, sales/estimators, and office/administrative and warehouse personnel.

All employers in this industry are members of the Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA). Safety associations represent the interests of employers and promote workplace safety through education and other initiatives. Improved workplace safety can result in fewer claims and help lower premiums. A portion of premiums collected is allocated to the association to support these initiatives.

Underwriting Considerations:

Businesses that sell siding and related exterior construction/renovation products and provide installation services through subcontractors, are part of this industry.

Siding businesses may also sell and install window packages, metal awnings, eavestroughs and roof flashing as additional exterior construction/renovation services. While a business may conduct extensive exterior construction and/or renovation services, it does not mean the business is a general contractor. It is necessary to determine whether the business is best described as Siding/Eaves/Soffit Installation, industry 42151 or Roofing, industry 42118 (in the same rate group) in recognition of elevated exterior renovation activity.

This industry covers stucco operations when conducted by the same employer involved in siding or other exterior work. Such businesses are not eligible for separate classifications and all operations would be classified in either industry 42151 or industry 42118. Business engaged exclusively in stucco operations or combined drywall and stucco operations are classified in industry 42135.

Businesses which manufacture vinyl and canvas awnings and install the awnings as an incidental service to the manufacturing are classified in industry 22101.
