Finishing Carpentry

Industry Code: 42147

Compulsory

Businesses in this industry are engaged primarily in on-site work that is restricted to finishing carpentry operations and do not cross over into framing or other rough carpentry related activities. Operation Details:

Work is done primarily on-site and involves the measuring, cutting, joining and fastening into place of the finished woodwork in residential or light commercial applications. Some work may be conducted in a shop environment prior to on-site installation such as kitchen or bathroom cabinets, railings, banisters, etc. The key here is the business focus relates to on-site cutting, finishing and installation with a high degree of skill or craftsmanship.

Finishing carpenters are generally journeymen carpenters and will utilize measuring tapes, staplers, mitre saws, jig saws, coping saws, finishing sanders and small hand tools.

Shop equipment might include table saws, planers, jointers, band saws, lathes, sanders and special fans and dust abatement equipment to clear the air.

All employers in this industry are members of the Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA). Safety associations represent the interests of employers and promote workplace safety through education and other initiatives. Improved workplace safety can result in fewer claims and help lower premiums. A portion of premiums collected is allocated to the association to support these initiatives.

Underwriting Considerations:

Employers in this industry must not be involved in any other construction trade services or general contracting operations. Employers that diversify beyond the point of finishing carpentry services are not eligible for more than one industry classification. Their business operations will be classified in the industry which best covers all of the activities being conducted.

Shop activity will be considered incidental where the primary focus is on the on-site installation of wood trim, baseboards and other fine woodwork such as custom cabinets and counter tops. A business that is focused on the manufacturing of fine wood products in a shop environment will be classified in Industry 25401. Any on-site installation or these products will be considered incidental.

Businesses that are engaged exclusively in the on-site installation of prefabricated counter tops, shelving units, cabinets, etc, that are manufactured by an unrelated firm, are classified in Industry 42133. However, Industry 42133 does not include on-site installation of any custom woodwork, baseboard, trim, etc.

Businesses that do framing, decks, fences, and other rough carpentry in conjunction with finishing carpentry should be classified in Industry 40401, Construction Trade Services - NEC.
