This is a supply and install industry of fire sprinkler systems found in buildings, parkades, plants, and special areas or projects such as in and around vessels or transformers.

Operation Details:

Fire sprinkler installation is similar to plumbing where piping is installed throughout an area, often overhead in ceilings. Sprinkler heads are attached at strategic intervals, and the system is hooked up to a water supply. Other mediums may include dry chemicals, liquid alkalyd salt, or halon gas, however, these are supplied on a smaller scale such as installation in one room only.

Businesses may utilize handtools, ladders, gauges/meters, trucks, warehouse/sales front, and employ plumbers, technical staff, warehouse staff, sales/estimators, office/administrative staff, and may also sell and service other fire protection/suppression equipment such as fire extinguishers which is included in this industry.

All employers in this industry are members of the Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA). Safety associations represent the interests of employers and promote workplace safety through education and other initiatives. Improved workplace safety can result in fewer claims and help lower premiums. A portion of premiums collected is allocated to the association to support these initiatives.

Underwriting Considerations:

Some safety businesses sell and service fire extinguishers, and don't provide sprinkler installation services. This activity is described under industry 86905. Underground sprinkler installation is classified in industry 42136.

Industry Custom Pricing: Waiving Cost Relief Option

This industry has chosen to participate in Industry Custom Pricing effective January 1, 2011. Costs related to the aggravation of a pre-existing condition will not be removed from the experience record of employers classified in this industry. In return, the portion of premiums collected to fund retroactive cost relief has been removed from the industry rate, resulting in a reduction in WCB premium rates for the industry.
