Construction Framing Contractor

Industry Code: 42143

Compulsory

Businesses engaged primarily as framers in the wood frame construction of residential structures, single family dwellings, duplexes, condominiums, (to a maximum of 5 stories as per the Alberta Building Code) and extending into similar light commercial and agricultural applications, are included in this industry.

Operation Details:

Wood framing contractors will construct the horizontal and vertical assembly of wood structural members (2x4, 2x6, etc) designed to carry vertical loads to the ground. Framing contractors will also install interior framework, roof trusses, sub-floors and wall and roof sheathing.

Framers, particularly on larger projects such as walk-up apartments, may also install windows, doors and stair stringers.

Tools and equipment may include hammers, levels, circular saws, tape measures, ladders, forklift, scaffolds and cranes.

A journeymen carpenter qualification is not a prerequisite to classification in this category. Many framers have established themselves through years of experience as opposed to an apprenticeship program.

All employers in this industry are members of the Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA). Safety associations represent the interests of employers and promote workplace safety through education and other initiatives. Improved workplace safety can result in fewer claims and help lower premiums. A portion of premiums collected is allocated to the association to support these initiatives.

Underwriting Considerations:

This industry will include employers which assemble or manufacture wall sections, floor joists or roof trusses in a woodworking shop or plant facility and is subsequently responsible for the erection or construction of the prefabricated sections. Employers in this type of business would have the entire business classified in this industry and would not be eligible for separate classifications for manufacturing and erection. This type of operation may be classified in industry 40405 if the employer otherwise qualifies as a residential general contractor.

Some metal framing, when conducted in conjunction with wood framing, is allowed in this industry, however it is primarily done in basements as part of building code requirements to insulate basement walls to grade (frost walls).

A business exclusively engaged in the placing of logs for log home construction, with no interior finishing responsibilities, is included in this industry.

Installation of metal studs, as a primary business activity, is typically conducted in conjunction with insulation and/or drywall and is appropriately classified in industry 42135, Drywall.

Businesses that conduct framing, deck and fence building and other miscellaneous rough carpentry or wood construction endeavours, should be classified in Industry 40401, Construction Trade Services - NEC. Consideration must be given to Policy 07-01 Part II regarding overall operations. If a business primarily conducts framing but will construct the occasional deck, fence or gazebo, they are properly classified in industry 42143, Wood Framing.

A business engaged exclusively in the installation of sub-floors, K-3 board, plywood, etc., is appropriately classified in Industry 42147, Finishing Carpentry. Any incidental framing, rough carpentry related jobs or other trade related activity will preclude them from classification in Industry 42147.
