Drywall/Plaster/Stucco/etc

Industry Code: 42135

Compulsory

A supply and install industry describing construction activity pertaining to drywall, plaster, stucco, parging and structural insulation in residential and commercial applications.

Operation Details:

Drywall is an interior finish of performed gypsum wallboards, nailed or screwed into place over wooden or metal studs that make up a wall or ceiling. Joints are taped, plaster is applied, the surface is sanded, and plaster reapplied until the wall is finished and ready for painting.

Wood lath are narrow strips of wood used as a base for plaster. Lathing is the process of assembling or placing the wood lath. Plaster is spread onto the lathing to finish the wall or ceiling.

Stucco is a cement plaster used for coating exterior walls and other exterior surfaces. Paper is stapled to the wall, wire mesh affixed, and the cement plaster may be sprayed on or applied by trowel.

To parge is to coat with plaster, particularly foundation walls and rough masonry. Parging is a thin coating of plaster or masonry cement. A parge coat is a coat of masonry cement applied to masonry for resistance to penetration of moisture.

Structural insulation may be fiberglass, styrofoam, zonelite, urethane foam, or blown or shredded paper with added fire retarding chemicals. Depending on the type of insulation, it may come in sheets, rolls, batts, or bales, and placed into exterior wall cavities or roof attic spaces manually, mechanically, or blown into place by truck-mounted blowers.

Businesses may use saws, hammers, nails, tape, trucks, and may employ drywallers, labourers, estimators, estimators, and sales, warehouse, office and administrative staff.

All employers in this industry are members of the Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA). Safety associations represent the interests of employers and promote workplace safety through education and other initiatives. Improved workplace safety can result in fewer claims and help lower premiums. A portion of premiums collected is allocated to the association to support these initiatives.

Underwriting Considerations:

Metal studs are generally installed as part of a drywall contract and are considered part of this industry when done so.

Business that specialize in the dismantling and installation of moveable wall systems, including metal studs, are classified in this industry. These systems consist of prefinished wall boards, usually manufactured from gypsum, that are attached to steel studs to form complete walls from floor to ceiling. These systems can be easily dismantled, moved and installed elsewhere, and incorporated into most modern office buildings.

Incidental suspended ceiling installation is permitted in this industry, as is some incidental or subordinate painting activity and ceiling texturing. Ceiling spraying/texturing, when conducted as part of an overall drywall construction project, is classified in this industry. The spraying/texturing of ceilings, when not performed as an overall drywall construction project, is classified in industry 42111, Painting/Decorating.

Mechanical insulation installation is classified in industry 42184.

Asbestos insulation removal or replacement at residential and commercial sites, when conducted as a separate activity, is classified in this industry. Asbestos insulation removal or replacement at industrial sites, when conducted as a separate activity, is classified in industry 42184, Mechanical Insulation.
