Cabinets/Counters - Assemble/Install

Industry Code: 42133

Compulsory

This industry describes only the sale, assembly and installation of the specific items of cabinets, counter tops, and shelving only.

Operation Details:

Typically, the products described are assembled from a stock of premanufactured wooden components. Assembly activity may be to glue, screw, and/or nail, and some mitre cuts to length. Trim, counter fill-ins, cupboard handles and hinges may also be worked on in a minor fashion and affixed. Businesses may sell a broad range of cabinetry and/or countertop surfaces.

After delivery of the product, installation extends little beyond setting the product in place, with only minor mitre cuts or cut-to-length adjustments of the product made on-site to satisfy customer needs.

The dismantling, moving and assembly of modular office furniture is included in this industry. This may involve a storage facility to hold furniture and equipment during a move as well as well as trucks and specially trained crews to assemble the furniture. Modular furniture refers to the office cubicles, desktops, overhead cabinets and adjustable keyboard tops used to create individual office work spaces. Some on-site cuts may be done of plastic, metal or wood moldings as well as screwing and bolting of the cabinets, partitions and desktops. Assembly can be done to suit almost any cubicle configuration imaginable based on the individual needs of each client.

Businesses may utilize small woodworking handtools, perhaps a table saw, mitre saw, a storefront or warehouse for stock, and a truck for delivery or service calls. Workers in this industry can include carpenters, journeymen, laborers, shipper/receiver, sales clerks/estimators, and office/administrative staff based on the individual needs of each client.

All employers in this industry are members of the Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA). Safety associations represent the interests of employers and promote workplace safety through education and other initiatives. Improved workplace safety can result in fewer claims and help lower premiums. A portion of premiums collected is allocated to the association to support these initiatives.

Underwriting Considerations:

Businesses that manufacture wood products from raw stock are classified in Industry 25401 - Wood Products - Mtg. Businesses that primarily supply and/or install natural and engineered stone products used for interior surfaces are classified in Industry 42113 - Tile/Terrazzo - Sales/Install.

Department stores or furniture stores that sell and install modular office furniture require an additional classification for the on-site assembly and installation of the office cubicles.

Sales and/or installation of moveable wall systems is classified in Industry 42135 - Drywall/Plaster/Stucco/etc. These systems consist of prefinished wall boards, usually manufactured from gypsum, that are attached to steel studs to form complete walls from floor to ceiling. These systems can be easily dismantled, moved and installed elsewhere and are incorporated in most modern office buildings.
