Water Well/Deep Core Drilling

Industry Code: 42130

Compulsory

Water well drilling is performed for domestic, commercial and irrigation applications. Deep core and/or diamond drilling is conducted for the purpose of obtaining deep core samples or penetrating hard rock masses. Deep core sampling is peformed for clients in the engineering, mining, petroleum and construction industries to determine earth rock and mineral content in anticipation of future mining or construction projects such as building dams, bridges, etc.

Operation Details:

Businesses in this industry may use either rotary and/or reverse circulation drilling methods for the drilling of water wells or for obtaining deep core samples for customers in the mining, oil and gas and construction sectors. Reverse circulation drilling is used extensively in mining exploration projects to recover chip and bulk samples of various ore bearing materials for analyzation on potential mining properties. Conventional rotary drilling is used for drilling water wells and in some construction and mining applications such as rotary wire line coring for heavy oil and tar sands.

In water well drilling, after a hole is drilled, a casing or shaft is placed inside the hole. Pumps and necessary attachments may be installed. Servicing water wells involves cleaning pumps and pressure systems.

The equipment used by employers in this industry includes trucks, mounted drilling rigs, bits, pumps, air compressors, hand tools, welders, casing/pipe and filtering systems. Drilling rigs are generally truck mounted, but may also be track or skid mounted as well. The drill pipe, bits and tools are changed for the various types of drilling. For example, to penetrate hard rock formations, diamond drill bits are used. Employees may include field supervisors, drillers, equipment operators, laborers, equipment maintenance mechanics and administrative staff.

Businesses in this industry do not provide any analysis of core samples procured. All samples are provided to the principal for analysis.

Underwriting Considerations:

Procuring soil samples for the purpose of testing (industry 42150) involves similar equipment and methods: that is, to obtain soil samples for analysis on potential projects such as construction, pipeline work, sewer and waterline installation, etc. However, businesses which procure soil samples generally do not obtain deep core samples and holes are usually no deeper than 100 feet. Whereas businesses in industry 42130 will drill to depths of 1500 feet.

Businesses which provide rat hole drilling and rig anchoring services are classified in industry 09904; businesses providing horizontal and angular boring are classified in industry 42103; and businesses which provide shot hole drilling services are classified in industry 09201. Larger businesses which offer a cross section of the drilling services included in the rate group are classified in the industry which represents the majority of the drilling services performed.

Premium Rate History:

Activities:

Deep Core drilling
Diamond bit Drilling
Drilling or Boring of Water Wells Only
Drilling Water Wells
Drilling, Diamond bit
Water Wells - Boring, Drilling and Sinking of
Water Wells - Servicing With Rigs

Rate Group History:

This rate group includes most types of drilling businesses, other than oil and gas drilling. In 1992, rate group 421200 was established, consolidating a number of drilling businesses which use similar drilling, boring and augering activities, equipment, processes and occupational mixes. In 1999, rate group 421200 was consolidated with Shot Hole Drilling, rate group 092101, in Sector 2 - Mining and Petroleum Development.
