Floor Coverings - Sales/Install

Industry Code: 42125

Compulsory

This industry is the supply and installation of various floor coverings, such as carpet, hardwood flooring, seamless flooring, and linoleum tiles in residential, commercial and institutional applications.

Operation Details:

The sales and installation of new carpet and underlay is the predominant activity in this industry, and may remove and repair old carpet. Businesses may sell and install hardwood flooring, such as that found in some homes, gymnasiums, and bowling alleys. Hardwood floors are comprised of wood strips nailed perpendicular but at odd lengths to each other. Sanding and finishing is required as well.

With seamless flooring, an epoxy or hardsetting coating is applied on top of a concrete base. This type of flooring is resistant to corrosion, water and heavy-duty wear and is often evident in high traffic pedestrian areas such as public and commercial buildings. A rubber-type of seamless or interlocking flooring is sometimes used in gyms and locker rooms.

To lay linoleum, glue is applied to the floor and the tiles laid and cut as necessary to fit corners and near walls.

Flooring stores may also display assorted product, sell related items, and stock large quantities of inventory. Installation may require carpet knifes, kneepads, staplers, hammers, sanders, forklifts, trucks, warehouse racks, etc. Businesses may employ carpet installers, laborers, technical staff, drivers, sales/estimators, and office/administrative staff.

All employers in this industry are members of the Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA). Safety associations represent the interests of employers and promote workplace safety through education and other initiatives. Improved workplace safety can result in fewer claims and help lower premiums. A portion of premiums collected is allocated to the association to support these initiatives.

Underwriting Considerations:
