Electric Wiring

Industry Code: 42124

Compulsory

This industry describes the supply and/or installation and servicing of electrical wiring, systems, components and equipment to conduct and receive electrical power in residential, commercial, institutional and industrial applications. This industry also describes the supply and/or installation, servicing or maintenance of instrumentation systems in residential, commercial, institutional and industrial applications.

Operation Details:

Activities may include complete or partial wiring or rewiring projects, including installing, connecting, and repairing electrical systems, panels, outlets, fixtures and equipment, and testing on the same. This industry includes installing and servicing electrical controls and systems in plants and commissioning (starting up) of large power systems.

This industry includes the sale, service and installation of various instrumentation, system and measurement controls, such as those related to heating, air conditioning and ventilation (HVAC) in buildings, plants and warehouses. Other instrumentation activity extends to installing, servicing or calibrating instrumentation devices that monitor flow or pressure or light such as gauges, meters, timers and sensors.

Businesses may do heat tracing: running electric heat-sensing cable along pipes to a control box. Occasionally, a backhoe/ditch-witch may be utilized to excavate a short distance to allow wires/cabling to be placed underground, such as between a house and garage.

It is recognized some businesses may also have over-the-counter sales of related accessories such as lamps, tracked lighting, bulbs, etc. Businesses may use handtools, wiring/cabling, ladders, scaffolding, spools and trucks, calibrating equipment, etc. and may employ electricians, technicians, instrument mechanics, laborers, sales/estimators, office staff and warehouse staff.

All employers in this industry are members of the Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA). Safety associations represent the interests of employers and promote workplace safety through education and other initiatives. Improved workplace safety can result in fewer claims and help lower premiums. A portion of premiums collected is allocated to the association to support these initiatives.

Underwriting Considerations:

Generally, electrical, cabling and instrumentation services are recognized as "systems" activities. An analogy presented by industry is that systems give a building or project 'a heart beat' - such as lights, HVAC control, power.

Generally businesses install, repair or maintain instrumentation and control systems. When these services are part of a contract, the entire operations are classified in the specific industry: mechanical instrumentation industry 42122; refrigeration/air conditioning in industry 89600; heating in industry 42117.

Companies in business solely for installation, repair and maintenance that do not extend into another industry identified above will have their operations classified in industry 42124. This includes pneumatic and all other instrumentation. Electrical contractors providing cabling/wiring services are included in this industry.

Contractors that only provide cabling/wiring services for office computer systems, telephones, etc. are classified in industry 42128.

Employers engaged in providing services relating to mechanical contracting, including any combination of plumbing, heating, air conditioning or refrigeration work will be classified in the industry within Rate Group 426100 that represents the majority of work done. Typically employers are classified in only one industry within a rate group.

Businesses which only sell and install security systems are classified in industry 42160.
