Industry Code: 42121
This is a supply and/or install industry of new and replacement plate glass; glass, wood and metal pedestrian doors; wood, aluminum and plastic-framed windows; and door and window hardware for residential, commercial and institutional applications.
Operation Details:
Glass is manufactured out of province. Plate glass is shipped in large crates and held in large warehouses. This glass may be further distributed as is to customers. At this stage, the plate glass is most often cut to a size ordered, or for purposes of easier handling in further distribution or manufacturing.
Glass is cut to length and size and placed (glazed) in wood, plastic, or extruded aluminum frames to be windows (including sealed glass units) or doors which may also be cut to size. Interior and exterior doors and windows may be drilled for holes for hardware. This industry includes all glass or mirror door and window supply and/or install activities including glazing, bevelling, edging and etching activities.
Businesses in this industry may also stock and sell (and install) related items over-the-counter such as weather stripping, unfinished doors and windows, wall mirrors, locks, hinges, handles, frames, sliding/patio/closet doors, sliding roof and floor tracks, closet organizers and shelving systems. Businesses in this industry are known to conduct sales of automotive glass as well, which requires no custom cutting work, as auto glass is specific to the make and model of a vehicle.
Businesses may utilize a warehouse, racks, glasscutters, saws, forklifts, trucks, and may employ glaziers, laborers, technical staff, warehouse/shop staff, sales/estimators, office/administrative staff, and drivers.
All employers in this industry are members of the Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA). Safety associations represent the interests of employers and promote workplace safety through education and other initiatives. Improved workplace safety can result in fewer claims and help lower premiums. A portion of premiums collected is allocated to the association to support these initiatives.
Underwriting Considerations:
Businesses in this industry, as stated under operational details, may stock and sell and/or install auto glass without the need for an additional classification. Strict application of policy 07-01 will determine the operation of a second business.
Businesses which deal exclusively in auto glass are classified in Autobody Services, industry 65800, and may also sell and install sunroofs, truck-window sliders, repair rock chips, and handle insurance claims by focusing the business more to the automobile market.
Caulking is generally done in conjunction with another service: caulking on windows as new or replacement/repair (industry 42121), high-rise window cleaning (industry 89703), waterproofing services (industry 42139). Caulking is also conducted on tiles (industry 42113).
Businesses that typically sell and install the large overhead doors and components are classified in industry 30302.
